Hermione wrapped the blanket tightly over her as Harry climbed into bed.
"Are you sure about this?" Harry asked as he awkwardly slid underneath the blanket. "You don't find this weird at all?"
"Harry, we need to stay close together," Hermione explained as her body stiffened when his leg touched hers. It was chilly inside the tent since they had agreed not to have any lights on at night just in case they were found.
"What do you think Ron would say if he saw this?" Harry asked as he put his glasses away and his wand underneath his pillow.
"Ron isn't here," Hermione said. They both were silent for a few seconds.
"Are you sure this is-", Harry began to ask but a noise from outside cut him off. It sounded like a twig snapping and leaves being crushed underneath someone's weight. They both heard it and reached silently for their wands. Harry silently lit his, ignoring Hermione's disagreement. They saw a shadow jump and realized it was just a frog. Hermione sighed in relief and allowed her head to gently rest against Harry's arm.
"I don't know how much longer I can take this," Hermione whispered.
"But we have to," Harry answered her as he turned the light off. "You even said it would be best if we stayed hidden even if it meant things like this."
"It's harder than I thought it would be then," Hermione said as she shifted back onto her pillow. She instantly missed the closeness and feeling of safety Harry had brought to her. Harry finally lay fully on his back and brought the blanket closer to him. His body was still tense since had never really shared a bed with another female, not even Ginny. The bed was small enough as it was. He normally slept on the couch and then switched with Ron to sleep on the top bunk. He couldn't move into a comfortable position without touching Hermione in some awkward way. Hermione had even positioned herself as close to the wall as she could without falling off the edge of the bed. He heard her sigh in frustration.
"Hermione?" Harry whispered. He felt her leg finally relax and rest against his.
"Maybe things aren't what we want right now, but we can at least try right?" Hermione said as she allowed herself to move closer to Harry so she could get more comfortable. "Oh come here Harry, you know I don't bite," she added. "It's just temporary."
She sat up to adjust her pillow as Harry moved closer to the center of the bed. If he had turned over during the night, he would have found himself rudely introduced to the hard floor. He laid down facing her and she rested her head on his arm again.
He finally welcomed Hermione's closeness. Her could feel her breath tickle a part of his chest but didn't complain about it. He started thinking about Ginny which made him put his arm across Hermione, bringing her head more into his chest. Harry laid his head on top of hers. He waited for her to object to something, but she remained silent.
"You're right, it's just temporary," Harry told her. "Things should get better soon."
"I hope so Harry. I really do," she answered. She shivered at some type of thought that she didn't mention to him. If this was the last night they were alive, at least they died knowing they both cared for each other enough to do what they could to survive. Hope was all they had left for now.
"I know you wish Ron was here with us," Harry blurted out. "I feel the same way even though he can be an ass."
"I constantly worry about him," Hermione said softly, "and everyone else."
"We all do, Hermione," he answered her. "I worry about you even though we see each other every day."
"You're right here though, so I'll be alright," she told him. Harry tried not to smile.
"Night Hermione," he finally said.
"Good night Harry," she told him before dozing off.
