Sally Jackson switched on the light that sat on her nightstand and rubbed her eyes. She was sure that the phone was ringing. Beside her Paul sat up sleepily.
"Who would be calling at this ungodly hour of the night?" He asked.
Sally checked the display, "Unknown number from... Is that Alaska?"
"Why don't you check the messages?"
She punched in the numbers and put the receiver to her ear, prepared for some telemarketer.
"Mom. Hey, I'm alive." Her hand went slack and the phone dropped to the ground.
"What is it Sally? What did they say?"
Tears formed in her eyes. "It's him, it's Percy."
A look of disbelief formed on Paul's face. "I'm sorry Sally but I really don't think that—"
She picked it up with shaking fingers. "Listen, it's him."
He pressed 1 to replay and put the phone to his ear. "It is. Goodness, Sally. I'm sorry."
"I know." The tears slipped down her cheek and she fell back onto Paul.
He wrapped her in a hug. Everything seemed so big, and she felt so helpless.
"He's safe. Maybe he'll..." her voice trailed off. "Maybe he'll be home soon."
But she knew in her heart that it would be a very long time before she saw her son again.
