The Ancients

Rodney had known from the start that he wouldn't hold out long under torture.

But he had also known the dangers of promising the Genii anything other than information, and he wasn't quite ready to give that up.

So, as Kolya had advanced upon him with a knife he had prayed, whispered promises to every Ascended being he'd heard named and then just the Ancients in general.

Promising coffee, chocolate.

Promising he'd save their city.

Promising everything other than the lives of the expedition members.

Anything in exchange for a miracle.

Rashly swearing a ZPM in exchange for their survival and the city's safety.

He'd recalled it warily afterwards but he quickly pushed it to the back of his mind.

This is the first time he's thought about it since.

As he stares at the dots on the screen that represent their death and destruction.

And he recalls the image of Alliana taking back their precious, hard-won prize.

And Kolya's, still smirking, face appears in front of his sight.

And he remembers a miracle, in the form of one John Sheppard and the survival of Carson and Teyla.

And it all blurs with one fact in his head as he realises he should have known better.

The Ancients don't forget.
