It was a still chilly night in Konoha. There was hardly any noise save for the ominous winds that blew through the village and caused the leaves on the trees to rustle. Recently most nights in Konoha were quiet and lifeless; there was not a lot of hubbub present because there were no people out. These nights were quiet because many of Konoha's ninjas were on missions and returned to their beds to immediately collapse in exhaustion. It was a period of crisis that demanded much of their villager's energy. They were in war against some strong clan that was not only knowledgeable but also skilled in ways that only hokages could hope to match.
There in the light of the full moon was a pair of youngsters who staggered as they walked through the village; they seemed to be the only people awake and out so late at night. They were Rin and Kakashi, who were born and raised in Konoha. Rin was a brown haired petite girl with purple square markings on her cheeks and Kakashi was a gray-haired young man who had his face half covered with a mask. He towered slightly over her but they were both well built and fit. Rin was walking with Kakashi; they were both tired from a long mission and relieved to finally be back in the village. It took them days to complete their mission of gathering information posing as a young married couple and had consisted of a lot of hurdles; they had always been close since they were childhood friends and were originally from the same squad. Rin did feel comfort in being with Kakashi as he walked her to her home.
"…."
"…."
They said nothing to each other for there was not much to say. The village reminded them of their childhood and that included their old friend Obito; it had been only a few years since Obito had died but the pain was very much still present. Rin and Kakashi had grown and Minato sensei was Hokage now, time had moved on but feelings lingered. Lots of things changed since Obito died. Rin glanced up at the full moon, admiring the way it stood out. It was so beautiful; that ray of light that filled the darkness. She smiled sadly as she resumed to looking straight ahead. She hadn't had much time to think since the mission.
-I miss you Obito.-she thought sadly, feeling that their team was incomplete without glanced at Rin and noticed her smiling sadly.
"Hey Rin." He said softly to get her attention. Rin turned and glanced at Kakashi.
"Yes?" she asked quietly, wondering if he forgot to say something about the mission or whatnot
Kakashi studied her face. She seemed so tired and emotionless, like if she would break anytime if she was pushed just a little more. However, he also couldn't underestimate that she was a strong ninja so he was a bit unsure of what approach to take. He stared at her for awhile and then finally looked away, deciding that asking directly would probably be best. "What's on your mind?" He inquired, hoping that it might help her to talk about it.
She peeked at Kakashi, smiling slightly since though he sounded bored while asking that he wasn't. He didn't say much to her but was somewhat overprotective of her and for that she was grateful but if she admitted she was thinking of Obito would he also become sad?
"…The moon." She quietly said as she looked up to gaze at it again.
"The moon?" Kakashi repeated, not really believing it. -She's not thinking about the moon.- he thought
Rin nodded "I've read in some books the moon has scars because whenever someone cries, the tear falls on the moons skin so the earth won't be hurt."
Kakashi stared at the moon in disbelief, as if unable to process what she was saying. He had never heard of such a story.
"Rin don't be silly, asteroids hit the moon and that's what makes the scars. You're speaking about the moon as if it's a person that's defending the earth or a weaker person. We're ninjas, we're not supposed to cry."
"…" Rin said nothing and smiled sadly since that answer was so like Kakashi. He was mostly a by the book guy but since meeting Obito he had softened a little. She sighed slightly as she noted that Kakashi had become a little stricter since Obito died. The story may have sounded silly but it was a myth sort of thing and Rin was into learning all sorts of things so she had stumbled across the information. In the myth it was said that the moon defended the earth from feeling sorrow.
There was a long quiet pause between them as Rin had nothing to say back to Kakashi.
-Did I say something wrong?- wondered Kakashi, picking up the social cues of awkwardness. He still hadn't gotten rid of the habit of being matter a fact. He knew it bothered most people. -Maybe she was thinking about it emotionally.- he thought as he scolded himself slightly for being unable to help her through her thought process.
"You're right Kakashi." She finally agreed, interrupting his thoughts. "It's stupid and silly."
Kakashi nodded and failed to notice her sad tone. They finally arrived in front of her house. Rin smiled emotionlessly at him "Well thanks for walking me even though you're tired. I'll see you next week."
He nodded and vanished in an instant. -I can't believe he still has energy.- she thought as she noted that she didn't even have enough energy to do that. -I should probably train more.-
Rin stepped into her place and collapsed on the floor exhausted. That mission really took all of her energy so as soon as she felt comfortable within her house she blacked out. Unfortunately for her, there were intruders in her house.
"This is her right? The one from the mission?" Three rogue ninjas had sneaked in after her and started tying her up skillfully. Rin's eyes flew wide open as soon as she felt their presence but she was too late; they had already incapacitated her. Her eyes then closed halfway since she was exhausted.
-Tch I barely even have any chakra much less energy! I can't defend myself like this!- Rin could hardly even move so she had no choice but to struggle to stay conscious during this.
The rogue ninjas tied her and covered her mouth.
"Sleep well." Said a raspy voice as he hit her on the back of the neck and forced her to completely black out.
