Snake Eyes

It was lonely down there.

She used to be so happy, so loved. Her master took such good care of her when they came here. She was just a little snake back then, and now she was massive.

Then her master left her and she'd been alone ever since, surviving on vermin and pets that wandered down into the chamber.

So lonely, so cold, so dark. Then there was light.

He came unannounced and brought light and warmth. She kept her eyes shut, as she'd been taught to do so many years ago.

He spoke her language and spoke in soft tones. He was amazed by her size. He called her magnificent. Master had called her that, too.

He became her new master. She would do anything for him. When he asked for her help, she eagerly followed him.

It was up through the pipes and then back down again, quickly out of sight.

The new master came to visit many nights later, but it was the final time. He was being sent away, and she would be all alone again.

Fifty years she waited and hoped.

She felt him again, somewhere she could not see. A girl's voice summoned her, and she answered readily, knowing he was behind it.

When he came to her again she was excited. Her master had returned! But he brought with him another that fought and stabbed.

When it was over, they left her body to rot.

She was never loved.
