"Please, don't do this," the goddess Artemis begged, holding a young babe close to her chest. Tears where falling down the immortal huntress' face as she gazed fearfully upon the woman standing before her.

Styx, goddess of the river named for her, was also the enforcer of the Oath's sworn upon her. She was a terrible beauty, unforgiving in her punishments.

Yet she could not punish a fellow god, except by indirect means. It was for this reason demigods suffered so.

And Artemis had broken her vow of eternal maidenhood, and sired a child, a son.

"You have broken your oath," Styx said flatly. "For your crime, it is your son who will be punished."

"Please," Artemis begged, "Punish me, do what you will to me, but don't punish him for my crime."

Styx paid no heed to the goddess' words as she said, "You son shall be his mother's son. He will be a natural hunter, of beast and men. Your son shall track with the senses of a beast, and he shall have claws of his own to kill and take down his prey with. He will be a protector, and mentor to young girls. But he will live forever. His wounds shall heal, and he will lose all he loves, and all he holds dear, to the cruelty that is time and death. And for all of his days, he will be hunted, by others, and by one who is like, yet not like him, who lives only for the kill. He will never know you, or his heritage. As your punishment for your broken oath, you son shall suffer this fate."

With a snap of her fingers, Styx's sentence was carried out, and Artemis' son vanished from her arms and she let out a terrible cry.

At the same time, the young child appeared with the Howlett family, and their memories were altered. And so he child became James Howlett, who would one day become Logan, who would one day become the Wolverine.

Victor Creed, who would become Sabertooth, was born to hunt him.

And Artemis wept for the fate she had, through her desire for a child and her broken oath, wrought upon her son.

I'll let you decide who Artemis broke her vow with. Considering Logan's war recovered, I think of it as Ares, but that's just me.
