Beavers
My entry for "B" of the A-Z Primeval FanFic Challenge
Who? Sid and Nancy
When? Sometime during the latter half of Series 3
Sid found Nancy happily munching on a slipper she'd found underneath the armchair. He nudged her in the side to get her attention and she squealed in reply. In the next room, the humans were yelling again; at least, one of them was yelling whilst the other tried to interrupt with excuses. Apparently, Connor had done something wrong again, which seemed to be a regular occurrence.
Sid and Nancy left the slipper half-chewed in the middle of the living room and poked their heads around the kitchen door. Lester was dressed in a smart suit and was shouting angrily, gesticulating at the distinctly pink laundry spilling out of the washing machine. Connor held on to a red pair of underpants and looked sheepish.
Luckily, it didn't look like Lester was going to throw anything this time and Sid was glad about that. He knew from experience what it felt like to be on the receiving end of one of those projectiles. Still, he didn't like the way Lester was laying into Connor. Surely he didn't deserve it.
The little diictodons squeaked at each other in agreement. It was time to create a distraction.
Nancy scooted into the kitchen and Sid chased her around the kitchen table until they lost their grip on the slippy lino flooring. They slid past the humans and into the wall, hitting the skirting board with a thump and a yelp.
"Get your stupid beavers away from me!" Lester yelled, jumping out of the way.
Beavers?
Sid's head was spinning from the collision but he had enough of his wits about him to have heard what the man said. He was most indignant to that comparison and charged ungainly towards Lester, grabbing hold of his left brogue shoe with his clumsy but effective front teeth. Then he tugged as hard as he could.
Nancy latched on to the trouser leg on his other side and pulled in the opposite direction. Sid noticed out the corner of his eye that Connor was struggling not to laugh. The other man was not nearly as amused, his face reddening with anger as he tried to keep his balance.
"Connor!" Lester warned.
"Right. Sorry." Connor muttered and knelt down, picking up a squirming Nancy. Regaining control of one of his legs meant Lester was able to use his free foot to try and push Sid off but he clung on as best he could.
Simultaneously, the telephone started to ring and Connor's handheld computer began to bleep incessantly on the kitchen counter.
"Argh!" Lester complained incoherently, freeing Sid with one final kick that sent him flying, before stomping off to answer his call.
Laughing, Connor bundled the two diictodons into his arms and managed to squeeze their wriggling forms back into their cage.
"Anomaly!" Lester called from down the hall. "Let's go, Connor!"
"Saved by the bell!" Connor announced, grinning at his pets as he fixed the make-shift cage door in place. "Thanks guys! Now, stay out of trouble!"
The front door slammed as the humans rushed off. Sid and Nancy looked at each other mischievously. As if they ever listened to that instruction!
