Never Forget Your First Love

Summary: Marti's view on Lizzie and Edwin. Lizwin, with a dash of one-sided Lizzie/Marti, and some mildly Dasey hints.

A/N: Spoilers from Derek Denies Denial. If you haven't seen it, Pumpkin is a dog that Marti and Lizzie kept hidden in their room until Derek found out, then they hid him in Derek's room.

She was really pretty. Not in the way Casey was pretty, you know all girly-pretty, but she was pretty in a Lizzie-pretty way. Sometimes Marti even thought that she was a little in love with her, the younger McDonald girl, and her step-sister. Not in love like how Daddy loved Nora, because Marti was smart and she knew that she was too young to know that love. If she caught it soon enough, that little love bug, she could keep it from making her fall completely, and Marti had caught that little brown bug in her room last week and had promptly put it in Casey's room; Smerek could use the help.

She did love Lizzie, probably more than she should, more than a sister should at least, even a step one. She admired the shine of her hair just a little too much, liked being hugged by her a little more than was necessary, wondered too often what a kiss from her would taste like, and she was just a little too jealous of her big brother. Edwin got Lizzie's special look, the one Nora gave to Daddy, and Derek gave to Casey, and every time those dark brown orbs would look at her brother that way, Marti would feel a strange burst of anger, a feeling of bitter remorse that she wasn't getting those looks from Lizzie, that her step-sister didn't see her that way. But it would be ok, she had gotten rid of that stupid love bug, so it couldn't make her fall any farther, and she could deal with how far she had fallen for the girl. Besides, she was happy for Lizzie. The one she loved, he loved her back, and Marti was happy for them.

It had been exciting though, when it had been just her and Lizzie hiding Pumpkin, keeping Edwin out of it. It had been a nice feeling, to know that she shared something with her that was just between the two of them. Even when they had included Derek, it was still mostly just the two of them, their special thing. They had been the one's scheming, and plotting, and it had felt good, just having it be their little secrete. But it had to go away, Marti knew that, knew that it would end, and it would go back to being Lizzie and Edwin, not Lizzie and Marti. She was ok with that, she knew it was coming and was prepared for it.

It only hurt a little the day Marti walked in to find Lizzie and Edwin kissing on the couch. She had half-expected to find them at some point, she knew they had be skirting around their feelings for a while and it was only a matter of time before they were revealed, but that didn't stop the pang in her heart. Didn't stop her from having to force the smile on her face and say that she was happy for them. She didn't cry though, she had long ago given up on ever being Lizzie's special person. And she was happy for them, for her, but it still hurt just a little.

Even after Marti's first serious boyfriend, who both Edwin and her Smerek terrorized repeatedly, Marti could still feel her heart give just the tiniest of jumps when Lizzie entered the room, but she knew that was to be expected, and that it would never go away completely. After all, one never full gets over their first love.

A/N: What do you think? Like? Dislike? I tried to keep Marti in character as much as possible. I know it's a little odd, but when the plot bunny bit, this is what I got.
