note: here we have a one-shot that I thought up when I was playing HeartGold.

warning: I believe this is called 'crack'.

disclaimer: I don't own Pokemon.

of steel hearts

It's just a loss, she thinks to herself as the young boy jumps giddily up and down with his pokemon. It's just another loss.

But it's not. The steel-type gym leader knows that much. He's destined to be a hero. It's written in stone. This boy isn't just another winner at her gym. She is a strong girl, even if it doesn't look it. Her heart had created walls around itself, after what happened with Volkner. It was steel, no matter how much she portrays herself as a sweet, friendly girl. Her heart has only ever been cracked once, by her love for pokemon. But nothing else has ever gotten in.

Her steel-type pokemon are her ultimate defense, but this boy completely cracked it.

In his world, dangers are probably concealed and death means nothing to him. But she knows, by winning this gym badge, she has just given him confidence… perhaps enough to take on Team Rocket. But she knows that with that could come any amount of danger. He could die.

No matter how much she wants to prevent it she knows she can't; what happens is up to the legendaries. If they choose to save him, good for him, he's proven himself worthy.

But then a pang hits her. She realizes something.

She waves good-bye as he walks out, skipping happily over his new win.

She realizes she didn't try her hardest because… well, because she knew she wouldn't be able to see his face sad again, like when ampharos was sick. His face was so, so sad. She couldn't be able to see his face like that because she knows that, even if she had only just met him mere hours ago, she loves him. He had broken her down and now… her steel heart was cracked.

Years later she sits in the lighthouse. She reads that the boy-Ethan was his name- had beaten Red, one of the strongest trainers in the world. She smiles because she knows that by giving him that gym badge he was able to proceed to Mount Silver. Then she reads that he married a girl from his childhood. She feels the smile drop. Unrequited love was never fun.
