Chapter 1: Flowers
I walk into the Pit, the waters below roaring, and the air cool. I walk towards the rail, the churning river below makes me shiver. This is where he died.
Where Al died.
I shiver again at the thought, and look up. I see the railing, the one where Christina almost fell to her death in initiation. Looking back on these memories seems so surreal, like a dream. But it was really a nightmare.
I don't hear him but I do feel him as he touches my shoulder. My boyfriend, Tobias.
"Let's go, I have something to show you," he tells me in my ear, which he kisses. We walk out of the Pit, up to the Pire.
We stop on the top, suprisingly there is a flower garden up here. I never noticed it before, because I only came up here during the winter. When I was with Zeke, shooting paintballs. Tobias holds my hand in his as we walk to the edge of the ceiling. I can see all of what used to be Chicago.
Tobias and I talk about nothing in particular for awhile, including kisses and hugs. But then he tells me to do something.
To close my eyes.
I do it. When he tells me to open them, he has a beautiful bouquet of flowers in his hand. Roses, the one in the middle the biggest and blood red. He removes that one and hands it to me. I smell the fragrance of the flower, but I see a glint from the sunlight in my eyes.
It's not my imagination, though. It's a diamond. But not just that, either.
A diamond ring.
