"Well, this is just perfect." She utters the words in a croaking sort of gasp.
"What?" He doesn't turn around, not bothering to look.
"Why don't you see for yourself?" Like she's about to whack him one.
Finally he turns, his eyes widening in horror and his hands reaching out automatically, though there's nothing to do. "Elegance!" he cries, rifling through the packs for bandages.
"Don't bother," she tells him weakly. Shaking her shoulder-length blonde hair away from her face, she pushes the boy away with her remaining strength. "Go. Whoever set this trap will probably be checking it. Don't hang around."
"But—"
"Go!" In the darkness of the growing night, the girl's eyes glint with desperation. "You've got to win this, Orb. For me."
"I will," he vows brokenly, backing away. He slings the pack over his shoulder and runs, finding a place far enough away that he won't be the next victim – he hopes.
When the cannon fires, he can't stop the sob that escapes him as he thinks of his cousin, his best friend, the one who is now dead. Whom he must avenge.
How? How to do it? What can he, just a boy from District 1, do to make them pay?
He thinks there's never going to be an answer. And that's when he sees the light of somebody's campfire through the trees.
Bingo.
