Unfulfilled Potential

Summary: What were Emma and Brennan to each other really? The truth is never simple…

Disclaimer: I own nothing, I'm just playing with characters that don't belong to me.

Unfulfilled potential.

In the end that's all he and Emma ever were.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda. Three words that will haunt him 'til the day he dies.

He could have kicked himself, could have screamed or cried or...anything other than what he did. Nothing. He was numb because in the end what was she to him. Girlfriend? No, they'd never crossed that line. So a friend then? But she'd been pulling back for months now. So not friends, then what were they exactly?

One moment of intense connection. A connection which nearly cost him his life, which brought him to Adam, changed his life forever. But that was all, the potential for something more never actually realised.

A pulsing line of emotional connection ignored for fear of what could happen, what they both knew would happen if they threw caution to the wind and gave in to what they both wanted. Unspoken, unacknowledged, but always there, they both knew it. Shoved aside for the good of the team everything that would have, could have, should have happened.

And now she was gone and he wished to god that just once he'd crossed that line from friend to...something else. Lover was too crude an expression for what they were to each other, soul mate too clichéd, what they had was beyond their current ability to describe, a word did not exist that could accurately portray it.

They were…two halves of the same whole, two pieces of the same puzzle, might as well have known each other forever that was how deep it went. Complete understanding of thoughts, fears emotions if only they were open to it, open to each other, but they never were. They never let what could be rule them, always too focused on the here and now until finally they almost forgot on a conscious level what they were to each other until all that was left was that instinctive recognition and an oppressive urge to ignore it.

He couldn't even talk to the others; it wasn't as if they'd understand. He and Shalimar had…something going and it wasn't as if they'd ever seen what Emma meant to him. How deep this bond went.

So he'd keep his silence, hold his peace and spend the rest of his life wondering about what could have been but never was. In the end it was all he could do.

Just putting up some old stories I recently ran into while cleaning my hard drive, figured I might as well post them as not. So what do ya think? Good, bad, indifferent? It'd be great if you'd tell me!
