A Chance to Remember

Syaoran stared at the package in hand. Today was Sakura's birthday.

He got her a gift.

He felt a bit odd giving her a gift when she knew nothing about him. (But he knew everything about her.)

Either way, it was just a gift, so he gave it to her.

Sakura brightened up at the gesture and at his simple words, "Happy Birthday, Princess."

"Thank you, Syaoran-kun!" She grinned widely.

Syaoran smiled a little. (She was as warm as the day they first met.)

Sakura turned around and frowned to herself. Sometimes, she got the feeling Syaoran wasn't really happy when he smiled. That bothered her.

"Princess?" He was confused.

"Are you all right, Syaoran-kun?"

He blinked at her words, what an odd question... He was trying to be. But he would never say such.

"Of course, I am."

Sakura sighed and finally turned to him with a box in her hands. "I have something for you too, Syaoran-kun." She said, handing him the box.

Syaoran stared at the box he received with a blank expression.

"Today is your birthday too, isn't it?"

Eyes widen.

"Happy Birthday, Syaoran-kun." Fai once told her that her best smile was more than enough, so she did just that.

How could she have known? Did she—

"Mokona told me." She explained. "What a coincidence, don't you think?"

"Indeed." Syaoran said with a smile.

That made sense. He was worried that something went wrong somehow. But he couldn't deny that tinge of happiness he felt at the possibility. Wishful thinking, how silly of him.

"Kurogane-san and Fai-san are out with Mokona but I'm sure they remembered too." She kept talking. "Hey Syaoran-kun, don't worry,"

He looked up at her from staring too long.

"I won't ever forget." (And she promised to herself she never will.)

He just stared at her as she went on.

"So when everyone else does, there'll always be someone to greet you... Even if you forget, I can remember for both of us!"

She laughed, but smiled sincerely at him.

Syaoran felt that sentiment of déjà vu envelope him.

He stared at Sakura's bright face.

But in a way, it was different.

And he smiled back.

Sakura felt warm inside. This time, she felt his smile was genuine.

And for several reasons, it was.
