She still misses her father, it's been close to 15 years and she still misses him every day. She was so young at the time that most adults think she doesn't remember him and maybe she doesn't remember every detail like her mom does. And maybe some of the memories she clings to so greatly are partly fabricated because she was too young to remember. But she still remembers her daddy.
She remembers his smile, he had the best smile in the world and the kind of father that makes people safe and happy. She remembers how happy he made her mom, and she remembers how forced her mom's smiles were for so many years after his death. Like she was so close to being happy, so very much on the edge and the fact that he wasn't there was the only thing that kept her from being able to truly smile when Ellis took her first steps or Bailey coming home after his first day of kindergarten.
She knew all the stories about him, relished every little detail anyone cared to tell her. How much he loved the ferry boats, that's what led her to taking a trip on the ferry whenever she felt just a little bit upset or lost in the world. She knew his catchphrase, she had it written in calligraphy and framed on her wall, "It's a beautiful day to save lives", it was inspiring. She knew how important a big family was to him and that's why she had almost become a mother herself. Not because of anything her mom did, after his death her mother had never missed a birthday, holiday or event. If she couldn't be there on the actual day of christmas, she instead held christmas with everyone important for their family the day before or the nearest possible day. But, she wanted to make sure that had a place to go, any lost souls were welcome over to her house. Being the oldest, she took care of her siblings and Sofia and Alex's kids and whoever else was in need. She had heard all the stories of his amazing surgeries that shouldn't have worked but did.
She loved going to New York to visit the family that lived out there. All of his siblings with all of their children. They accepted her, even when she stood out the most. For a small second, she believed that because she didn't look anything like him, her family wouldn't want anything to do with him.. Bailey and Ellis, you could both see the striking resemblance between them and their father. And maybe it was that resemblance mixed with the fact that Bailey couldn't remember him and Ellis wasn't even born when he died. So she clung on to every detail about her father that she could. She had pictures of him and her framed all over her walls. She was always eager for someone to tell her a story.
Zola missed her father all the time. She missed him an awful lot.
