A/N: All right, first Firefly fan fiction ever because I'm playing catch up with this awesome show. It's Simon/Kaylee of course because I ship them. One-shot.

It'd come to this really with Simon hesitantly making his way to Kaylee's room, just stopping short of the door. It was usually about here when he'd tell himself how he actually felt about her, instead of managing becoming a rambling idiot to only want to stick his foot in his mouth. Tonight though, he was able to step through easily enough because Kaylee was all ready asleep.
Her limps were all spread with her blanket tossed in a heap onto the floor. The Doc chuckled lightly to himself before he closed the gap between himself and The Sleeping Mechanic. He was careful as put her back into a more comfortable position in her colorful hammock. It wasn't so strange in doing this due to the simple fact he'd had years of practice with getting River to bed. The only difference here there was some slight awkwardness due to the unspoken mutual feelings that had swept between the two when he wasn't looking.
After getting her situated, he bent down to pick up the blanket. He placed it over her, tugging her in. "There, snug as a bug in a rug," he softly sang out with a smile.
Just when he thought he was finished, he noticed there was a loose strand of hair that had escaped. Out of habit, he reached for it, as he would with River but came to a abrupt stop when he remembered that this wasn't his sister.
The Doc looked down upon her with a longing in his gaze. Why was it that he couldn't tell her? Instead, he wound up a rambling idiot because she had that effect on him. Yet here, as he placed the escaped strand of hair back behind her ear, he was able to mutter the words:
"Wo ai ni."
Which easily translated to "I love you."
"I love you too."
For a split second, Simon thought he worried that Kaylee had awoken, but she had not. The Mechanic was still sleeping. She was merely dreaming while he was wide awake. He sighed with frustration. As he took his leave of Kaylee's quarters, he hoped that one day he'd be able to confess everything that his heart contained. This day being in the far, far off future.
