Disclaimer: I don't own Sonic the Hedgehog or "Sonic X".
A/N: So I watched this episode the other day… and all I could think about was that look on Sonic's face the moment that portal shut down. That startled expression that was akin to getting slapped in the face.
Acceptance
Sonic assured the others that he would follow shortly and watched them fade into the light. It was his choice to go last so he could make sure everyone else made it through. Though the people of this world had been kind to them but it was important that no one was left behind… Not just because it was their worlds at stake but because they would be all alone, among a planet of humans.
The cameras were rolling along with the tears. Everyone upset in one way or another about losing friends they had grown to know. People promising they'd never forget and exchanging gifts to be remembered by.
He had hung back for his own farewell though he would have just as easily gone without a word, it was always easier that way after all. Chris called him back by name though and so he turned, shook his hand, said good-bye. That was suppose to be the end and he certainly wouldn't cry like the rest so with a smile he headed back towards the portal, standing tall.
All eyes were on him, baring into his back as his time on this planet drew to a close. It had been fun but he really was ready to leave. Several steps forward and he was almost there but then… right when he stepped up to thresh hold the brilliant white light went out like a smothered flame.
He bounced back a step, stiff backed and shocked. He was right there what…
…Happened?
It was only when he glanced sideways to the control panel that he saw him. Chris had purposely slammed his hand down on the button, terminating his way home. Surely he understand the consequences of his actions so why had he done that?
Sonic couldn't move, frozen with disbelief but that didn't matter because the kid ran up to him and grabbed him by the hand. Pulling him away from the scene and towards the tree line. Sonic could do nothing but stagger behind for several moments trying to work it out in his mind. Why had Chris separated him from his family?
He glanced up at the kid as they went, he was pretty upset- wasn't he?
It seemed that Chris couldn't bare to say good-bye.
There were thoughts swarming around in the kid's head: he was thinking about how calm Sonic seemed to be. He knew what he had done back there had been selfish and was expecting some sort of verbal tongue lashing about it, a little resistance even but Sonic didn't show any sign of doing either.
As Chris pedaled insanely forward on the stolen bike, he just lay there.
He was leaving Chris to mull over his thoughts in the hopes that he would figure out what was the right thing to do. They couldn't run forever- no one knew that better than Sonic. "Maybe they'll stop looking." The kid was still convinced they could though and he wasn't about to tell him otherwise.
His gaze never even brushed the map as they sat around at the diner. He swallowed his food with scarcely a bite and waited for Chris to make up his mind. He'd be okay with anywhere, he'd already seen almost everything the planet had to offer. Why couldn't the kid take a hint?
"Your parents must be worried about you." Chris wouldn't listen to reason, he more or less insisted that they didn't care about him. If they did they have more time to spend with him. The kid was lucky to even have parents but despite deciding this, Sonic didn't say a word.
He helped Chris every step of the way even when he started swearing he could do it all by himself. Sonic was nothing but a scapegoat for the kid's mental turmoil. It wasn't his fault that Chris had family problems but he was the only one around at the moment- clearly the only one he felt safe taking it out on.
Funny- Sonic could kill him with a single spin jump but he wouldn't.
Sonic didn't have to be here, he could leave this kid in the dust in a heartbeat. So when he accused him of just pretending to be his friend it was more than a little insulting.
If not for Chris he'd been home right now, getting reacquainted with his own world.
"That's not it Chris. I am your friend." He wouldn't still be here if they weren't friends. He shifted in the slightest as he tried to warm himself at the fireside. He was waiting for the kid to tell him what he needed to hear so he could return to the others. They were probably waiting for him but he wouldn't leave as long as Chris still needed him here. "I'll stay if you want me to."
Even though Chris had cut him off from everything that mattered to him personally…
It didn't matter. He forgave him. Chris would make the right decision. He'd let him leave.
So Sonic said with confidence: "I'll do whatever you decide."
A/N: read and review... maybe? this story is probably hardly worth it.
