James Heller is a rooftop of a skyscraper confronting a figure who has powers similar to him.

His name is Alex Mercer.

Ever since he came back to New York from a war overseas, Heller had found out that his wife and daughter were killed by the Blacklight outbreak while he was away. Realizing this, he has joined with the military into fighting the infection at the Red Zone. Somehow, he's good of surviving the virus monsters he battled against.

Well, not well for him.

Heller joined the fight because he wants to die. He lost his family to the virus, giving him no reason to live on. He just wants to die so that he can join his wife and child at the afterlife. So far, he still lives on. However, that's all going to change.

One day, Heller embarks on another suicide mission in hopes of getting his wish. A Hunter shows up and is about to tear Heller apart. He shoots at it, but it scratches him in the chest. Heller felt like this is the day he'll die.

What he didn't know was that Alex has seen all the action that he did fighting against the infection. He grabs Heller and infected him with the virus, giving him powers similar to him.

Then, he has left.

Heller now knows Alex did all this. He will have his revenge on him.

"Mercer! It's time to pay for what you did to my family!" says Heller in an angry tone. He turns him his right arm into a massive blade and attempts to strike Alex, but the strike is blocked. It was Alex, who also turned his right arm into the same weapon Heller has wielded.

He grabs Heller and tosses him off.

"Tell me, Heller? You come after me all this time just to avenge your wife and child?" Alex mocks him with this kind of reason. "You think you should listen to my reason for all this."

He explains, "I wanted to find someone who could be useful for fighting against both the infection and the military. That's why I turned this section of New York Zone into my hiding my place. My goal is to find someone who could survive long enough to fight the infection. Guess who did I find?"

Heller realizes the answer to this question. "It's me."

"That's right, Heller, it's you. I infected you with the virus and hoped that you'll get stronger as you proceed. Is that understood?"

"Yes, I understand." replies Heller. He now knows the reason.

Alex begins to explain more, "Now then, I'll give you a choice: you can either join me and fight against both the virus and the military or you can absorb me and avenge your family."

What is Heller going to choose?
