Come, all ye children, and gather around
I'll spin for you a tale from the Underground
Let me tell you all now of the Goblin King
And of our subjects most dangerous fling
It started about a thousand years ago
When our story's hero first met his foe
Tensions were thick and war was at hand
Our dear Jareth needed to protect his land
It had all started over a beautiful girl
At first sight she'd left the King in a whirl
Young and foolish he pursued love without thought
Not knowing until later what trouble he'd wrought
It seemed the girl was the daughter of an arrogant lord
Who thought his daughter too perfect for any to court
But these rules dear Jareth chose to ignore
He was not even stopped by the locks on her door
In secret for so long these lovers did stay
Never expecting to be discovered that day
The day the lord declared war on our Jareth
But not before forcing him to watch his love's death
That was the day Jareth's heart turned to stone
He became emotionless and cold as his throne
But still he had his own land to defend
As he prayed for the war to come to an end
That was when the hedge maze first grew
Back in those days when the labyrinth was new
And in some areas, headge turned to rock
With no outer gate or door on which to knock
Oubliettes appeared each in a random spot
Attackers who fell in were left there to rot
And then came the Bog with it's stench eternal
Though few got that far through the maze infernal
Each of Jareth's subjects knew where they belonged
As they waited for she who would right what was wrong
For nearly a thousand years did they wait
By which time Jareth grew quite used to his fate
Then one day came the wish that changed all
To the Goblin King's ears came that special girl's call
No matter what anyone set in her way
Mortal girl showed herself match for the Fae
She said the right words and then Jareth knew
All he had been told would happen came true
There was no more of the war to be feared
And while the maze stayed, the danger disappeared
He was now free to court her and make her his wife
This was the moment for which he'd waited his life
From then on they lived in love and in laughter
And like in all good tales, they lived happy ever after
