Longshot had a real name once, but it is no longer important. It was a name for a person that no longer exists, the name of a person before his life was ripped from him- before he became a freedom fighter- before his people needed to fight for freedom.
His past is the reason that he started, but it is not the reason he continues. Longshot fights so that others do not have to; he fights so that others may enjoy the life that he can no longer live. But most of all he fights because that is all he has left.
Silence is his companion, words did nothing to save his family, words cannot save anyone anymore. The bow is his weapon, with it he can take down a superior enemy without placing himself in danger- he is always fighting a superior enemy- an endless stream of Fire Nation soldiers.
Longshot doesn't speak because he knows that it is inevitable, they will lose, there is no hope- and he is tired of lying to himself. But there is today, and now. So he continues fighting the fight, one Fire Nation soldier at a time, because the alternative... is death- and Longshot has already died once.
