Every time the phone rings, she jumps up to answer. Which is stupid, since he won't use the phone, anyway. If he does come back—unlikely—he'll just show up one day. No call, no warning—he'll just be here. Alive. Safe. Maybe even happy, though she doesn't think she's ever seen him happy before.

He was always staring down the road, waiting for something. He never could explain what, just that somewhere, out there in the wide world, was a place for him. She tried telling him, over and over, that he'd always have a place with her—but he didn't believe.

And then he was gone. Just up and vanished one night. Didn't even say goodbye. Not that she can blame him for that—much—since if he'd spoken to her, she'd have convinced him to stay. She's sure of that.

He'll be back when he is, and not a day before. But she still springs to her feet and lunges for the phone, always hoping—
