All characters and setting provided by Masashi Kishimoto-sensei. The song "Up on the Roof," written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, notably recorded by The Drifters, also does not belong to me. This is a not-for-profit fan work, no money will be made from this enterprise, no permission was granted by any party, just possibly I might enjoying one of my favorite songs a little bit more. I endeavor for any potential reader to perhaps find some enjoyment as well, with that let's proceed.

Iruka's smile brightened at the next shinobi in line. "Kakashi-sensei."

The jounin in question put the little orange book away. He looked the seated man in the eye as he handed in the completed mission report. "I saw you last night. Up on the roof." Kakashi hoped his tone remained aloof, indifferent even.

"Oh, you did, huh?" Iruka's smile lop-sided with his tilting head. "Why didn't you drop by then to say 'hello?'" His voice pitching lower as he spoke.

Kakashi would not be distracted by the almost-leer the lower ranked man was giving him. Nor would he break his practiced slouch for such a quibbling investigation, nor blush. He reluctantly looked away. "It didn't look like I should interrupt."

Iruka looked at the man quizzically until his face transformed into a distant, rapturous glow. "Kakashi-sensei, don't you think that the roof is a relaxing place to be? Peacefully away from the bustling streets? Where the crisp air lightly breezes by? Sometimes when I get home to an empty apartment, well, it's just a little too much, or, rather, not enough. Instead, I just love to climb to the highest point available and let my worries float away."

Kakashi nodded. He thought of the times he would sit out a night of insomnia on the Hokage Monument. Despite this, the jounin wanted to read more into that statement, much more. He remained silent, hoping for more.

"Next time, Kakashi-sensei, you shouldn't worry about bothering me. I'd love to share the stars with you, anytime." The bright smile was back, accompanied by a soft blush, Kakashi noticed. Kakashi feared a matching set occupied his own face. Luckily the mask hid most of his reaction. His voice did not.

"I'll keep that in mind, Iruka-sensei." Looking down at the desk Kakashi asked, "how is the report?"

"Oh! Yes, everything seems to be in order, Kakashi-sensei. Thank you for your hard work today."

With one last smile and a wave they parted. "There's always room on my roof for you, Kakashi."

^^ So that's been in my head for like, oh golly, ten months or so? Hahaha, I don't think it came out as good as I had originally wanted, but that's what you get for waiting forever...

I've been wondering: is this this a pre-KakaIru, an IruKaka, or Established!KakaIru fic? Any feedback will be gratefully received, but as someone who often is too shy to respond, I'll understand.

"I keep on a-tellin' you, right smack dab in the middle of town, I found a paradise that's trouble proof. And if this world starts getting you down, there's room enough for two, up on the roof~~!"
