He With One Chopstick
The scallions weren't going to chop themselves. Taiwan quietly handled the knife against the cutting board, going from right to left and never lifting the tip of the blade too high (as her brother advised her long ago). Another monthly family dinner meant serious cooking, chopping, flipping, and getting scolded by an old man- it was the third month in a row that poor Taiwan was drawn to help make the mountains of food…
Slippered footsteps ran up and lifted a steam pot's lid behind her. "Taiwan!" China gasped. "You left this on the whole time without turning it over?! It's all stuck to the pot-dish! I have to scrape off now!"
"Well, I kind of figured it would be fine," she said, looking over her shoulder a bit. Oh no, not again. Here it comes…
China turned down the heat a bit and threw some sauce in, scraping the sides with a spatula. He talked calmly as he fixed the dish. "You should always pay attention to everything around you, especially when you are cooking. Take things one at a time." As Taiwan watched, he quickly side-stepped to the sink and added a dash of water, making a cloud of steam shoot up above them.
He clattered it back onto the stove and gave his sister a tiny smile. "Just yell for me if you need some help next time."
Ah, here it- the girl stopped cutting and turned completely around, as if she'd heard something wrong. "Wait, that's it? That's all you were going to say?"
"Well, yeah, I guess…" China looked over through the warm vapor. "Were you waiting to hear different thing?"
"No, no…" I could have sworn he was going to… Taiwan thought. "Just… never mind."
A loud hiss filled the air as the food was tossed straight up and caught. "Fine, then."
She took up the knife at her veggie station again with a slightly surprised (and pleased) face. "Hm."
Things stayed quiet for awhile, or as quiet as things can be when there's Asian food cooking. The sounds of boiling water, frying rice, and the shok-shok-shok of slicing mushrooms took over.
Then, China looked at Taiwan with a grin. "Or, as Confucius say-"
"I KNEW IT!"
