Forget the World

If I lay here…
If I just lay here…
Would you lie with me and just forget the world? – Snow Patrol
Deep blue eyes stared at the vast expanse of sky above him. The grass and wild-flowers surrounding him swayed back and forth in the soft breeze. The sky was mottled with a few white clouds. He closed his eyes and let his breath pass his lips in a soft sigh.
He didn't get many moments like this anymore. He wasn't allowed to just lie in a field and forget the world. He wasn't allowed to have any sort of leisure. He wasn't allowed normality.
Why? Because he was the Third Child—pilot of the Evangelion Unit 01. Shinji Ikari.
He closed his eyes again and for a moment he could imagine he was ordinary. That was until soft footsteps broke through the natural hum of the warm spring. Soon, a face appeared above him.
The soft smile, and warm crimson eyes were familiar to him. There was a time when they reminded Shinji of blood, but now they made him think of the ladybug that had drifted by on the breeze. The silver hair floated gently around the owner's face, giving him an angelic look.
"Do you mind if I join you, Shinji?" the lilting voice spoke to him.
The brown-haired boy felt his lips turn into a smile and he responded with, "Of course not, Kaworu."
He closed his eyes and heard, more than saw, Kaworu move around and sit down next to Shinji. Moments later, something heavy settled on his stomach. His eyes flew open to find Kaworu's entrancing vermillion eyes staring up at him, a kind smile on his face.
Shinji uttered a sigh of contentment and brought a hand to thread into the other boy's silver hair. The brunette's hand continued to mindlessly play with Kaworu's hair as the two lay there for an immeasurable amount of time.
Shinji felt Kaworu's head move to look at him and he looked down at the silver-haired boy. Kaworu smiled. "Do you know what I wish, Shinji?"
"No."
"To forget the world. This moment…this moment is perfect. If I were to just lie here, would you lay with me, and just forget the world?"
Shinji's mind floated to fantasies of growing old with Kaworu in a house centered in a peaceful field. To wishes of being free to love the boy he wished, without the Angels and Eva's and NERV. He smiled.
"Yes."
"Our house…do you think it would be blue?" asked Kaworu.
And Shinji smiled, because that was exactly as he pictured it.
AN: I've been meaning to write this since before I wrote my very first fanfiction. Talk about procrastination! Haha! The idea...the moment in my head didn't come across quite right, so I do hope you understand what I'm trying to 'say' with this. Please push the pretty button and drop me a line...or ten.
