PARALYSIS
It's been a while and although I have continued reading fiction, given my addiction, I couldn't write much.
Time and inspiration, I had neither.
However, yesterday, they came knocking at the doors of my imagination only to surprise me with this little piece.
They stood at the edge of the cliff, the warm, summer breeze enveloping them. The wind made her hair go all wild, a rippling cascade of brown waters. He wanted to reach out and put that lock of hair behind her ear, but he couldn't.
The wheels crushed the stones as he stirred, the pebbles crunching beneath the wheelchair that he had been confined to for the last decade.
He could see that it was killing her on the insides but ofcourse, the pain of his absence would, by all means, would reduce the pain of his sufferings to a minuscule speck in the depths of pain. But there she was, attempting to hide all that scared her behind that brave face of hers. He remembered when she had held his hand in the church, on a similar summer day and promised that she'd do anything for him. A promise, made when they were simply eighteen. A good fifteen years had passed and she was still keeping her promise.
"I love you. You know that? Right? And.. Its okay if you want this. I know that it hurts, Edward, I know it does. I'll love you, forever, my love"
There was so much pain in her voice that it made him flinch, visibly flinch.
"Thankyou. I love you too. Forever"
He spoke in a voice, barely audible, ungrateful for being so selfish.
She kissed his forehead and held his palms to her face before finally placing them on his lap.
Worthless, paralysed body, he sulked. Hands that couldn't even touch her until she picked them up. Lifeless, worthless, he thought.
They stood silently, watching the water, the fierce, murderous current.
He looked at her, turning his head as far as he could and saw her taking a deep breath - probably soaking in their last moment together and then, mustering all her strength, she pushed.
She stood at the edge of that cliff and watched till she saw the last of the wheelchair's steel disappear under the water.
