A Broken Heart
By Maddy Adolphson
A girl with curly black hair reached out and shut the lifeless blue eyes of the dead boy in front of her. The eyes had sparkled her way for so long. Pain rippled through her like a continuous earthquake, each vibration was more painful than the last. She ran her fingers through his soft brown hair, which tickled the girl's fingers. She stroked his cheek which dimpled sometimes when he smiled his sarcastic smile. She slowly bent over and kissed his dead frozen lips once more. It wasn't the same as the warm and caring kisses he once gave her.
The girl stood up, her bare feet being bit by the cold. She dragged her bloodied ankle across the rough surface of the tall building to the very edge. She looked below to the street, and saw the ant-sized cars and the aphid-sized people. The girl took a deep breath.
Don't! She heard a faint voice behind her utter. She whipped around. She gasped, putting her hand to her mouth to keep her from screaming.
There in front of her stood a faint glowing image of her beloved. She looked back and forth between his body and this glowing image of him. Her tears slowed down, but only a little, dripping down one by one. She took a step and lifted her hand to his cheek. She flinched away from the surprising warmth.
"Damon, is it really you?" the girl cried. He smiled, nodding.
"Elena," he said, his voice ringing, "don't do what you're about to do."
"I can't live without you," she insisted. "It hurts too much. There's just too much pain. I want to make it stop. I want to make the pain of you being gone stop."
"My beautiful you won't live life without me," he said. "No matter what you go through, no matter what happens, I'll always be with you."
"How will I know?" she asked. "How will I know if you're there or not?"
"Whenever a breeze brushes through your hair or whenever you hear a mysterious 'I love you', you'll know I'm there. Elena stared at him for a moment or two. Then, she nodded, slowly through her tears.
"Okay," she whispered pain visible in her voice. With small sadness in his eyes, he brushed her hair away from her face and gently pressed his lips to her forehead. Elena's tears started streaming down harder, again.
"Shh-shh, don't cry," he said. She tried to say I couldn't but he pressed his lips softly to hers. She savored all the warmth and love of this kiss, knowing that it will be their last. He pulled away, and caressed her face.
"We'll meet, again," he told me. "Not in this lifetime, but the next." Then, in the blink of an eye, he vanished.
She collapsed to the ground, pain raking her heart, sobs pouring out of her. Then, she felt a breeze. Not the normal cold ones they have during winter nights, but a sweet-smelling, warm one. She slowly looked up. Whenever a breeze brushes through your hair…I'm there. These words echoed through her mind as a small hope, the size of a candlestick flame, lit in her heart.
"I love you," she whispered into the breeze, and she knew, he heard her. She slowly pushed herself up off the concrete roof, standing up to her full height. Then, she limped over to the door that led her to this spot, and walked into a new life and a new future.
