Prologue

Her light once shined brightly upon the Kingdom. But fate played a terrible hand, and her Heart was stolen away.

Grievance filled her people. Far too young to have shadows in her eyes.

Though she was still placed upon her throne, she did not rule. The palace walls echoed nothing but whispers and silent wishes. There was no one who could help mend the broken fragments left behind into something that even resembled what she once was.

But that didn't mean they hadn't tried.

A young, kind-hearted, but foolish boy, raised alongside the royal family, had fallen for the Princess, and soon became a part of the coalition to search for any vestige that they may find the Princess' Heart.

Throughout many trials, and nearly all his compatriots lost to the darkness, he continued to look for a way, any way, to revive their beloved ruler.

Along his travels, he had met a man who spoke of giving one's heart to another, and how to achieve it. He did not know if he should trust this man, but irregardless, he had stowed away this dark information in the back of his mind.

It would be years before he returned. Heart heavy and swelled with doubt. Only when he came to be in her audience did he know what he was setting out to do was his only choice.

Kneeling before her quiet gaze, an incantation and murmurs to the depths of darkness, he withdrew his own heart, shining like a white ember.

Entrails of shadows crept rapidly upon him, as his heart slowly drifted from his chest. Ethereal strands of light reaching out for the girl. Her lavender eyes grew brighter as they seeped into her bosom, filling her with a long forgotten warmth.

The first words that penetrate her mind, and her newly formed heart, struck her with a semblance of gratitude. But grief and sorrow quickly took over. Her body still frozen, too slow to regain control.

The young man who had loyally knelt down below was quickly being overcome in shadow, his eyes transformed from a beautiful crystal blue then sickeningly bled into a haunting amber.

Tears streamed down his needlessly happy face.

"A heart for my Princess… For… my love…"
