Author's Notes: This is a quick little one shot featuring a OFC paired with Mac and inspired by one my quotations by Herb Caen. I believe that is his name.

Here and Now:

Mac smiled as his eyes caught Lori, his current love. She was sitting on the sofa, lost in the words of the book he got her a few days ago. It was on different quotations. She loved those. He knew she would love it. She hadn't been able to put it down even though she's all ready knew half the quotes in there. He sat down next to her.

"Are you ever going to put that thing down?" he asked playfully.

"Hey, this is your fault MacLeod, you were the one who got it for me." She retorted in the same matter.

The Highlander chuckled. "Well, maybe I should take it back." He tried to grab it away but she pulled it close to her.

"No way, I love it!" she said. "It even has my favorite quote in it." Lori showed it to him.

Mac cleared his throat and read it aloud. "The only thing wrong with immortality is it tends to go on forever." He then saw the author. "Herb Cain."

Mac laughed again. "What?" Lori asked him.

Lori had no idea who he truly was, an Immortal. He planned to keep it that way, at least as long as he could. He didn't want her involved in the Game. In fact, when they first met at Joe's he knew he liked her the moment he saw her, and tried very hard to fight the feelings off but it didn't work, especially since Joe helped push the two together.

"Nothing," he lied.

He knew Herb Cain. He was a fellow Immortal just like he was, he spoke the truth of Immortality. He was curious on what Lori thought on the subject. The Highlander figured she was like every other Mortal: it was a romantic idea, gaining knowledge through out the centuries and he was right. That's what she told him.

"What about the downside…" he said with hesitation.

"There's a bad side?" she asked.

Lori studied Mac. He was always so mysterious. It was true that was one thing she loved about him, but there was something more to him that he wasn't telling her. She could see it in his eyes, just like right now. "You seem like you know what you're talking about."

The Highlander went into quick thinking mode. It was definitely not time for her to know the truth. "Just thinking about it, I mean you watch the ones around die and you can't do a thing to stop it. You're lucky if the history books pick you up, and if not you're forgotten… The only way a friend lives is through your memory…" Then you got the whole going around chopping each other's heads off part, but this he added to himself.

"Mac, are you all right?" she questions worriedly.

"I'm sorry, got lost for a moment." He says. "I just know what its like to lose a lot of people you love and you know what, one life time would be nice for me."

"I guess you got a point MacLeod…" Lori looks at him and smiles: "Do you always hate being right all the time?"

He returns her smile. "Not really."

Lori playfully hit him. Mac took this time and took the book away. This time she let him. "How about we stop worrying about the past, and the future, and enjoy the here and now." Mac wrapped his arms around her.

Lori laid her head upon his chest. She agreed with him. Everything else didn't matter. They were here together. Indeed, here and now was looking pretty damn good.

Fin.

Author's Notes: What did you think? I might make a squeal to this. Not really sure yet.
