Who Am I?

I am lost,
Adrift in the ocean
Of my own mind,
Shipwrecked by my betrayal
Of my dearest friends.
While I am here,
I look at my life -
I try to comprehend
My choices and deeds,
My whole identity.
The world began for me,
With a man dead beside me,
With myself wounded, unknowing
Of who and what I was.
The shattered fragments
Of elusive memories
Said that I was a SOLDIER,
That I was from Nibel -
That I made a promise.
We came to protect
The town of my birth
From monsters, unaware
Of the danger we brought
In our leader's breast.
Something happened there,
Something made him snap -
The man who was our leader
Became our worst enemy.
Eventually, you found me
You asked me to help you.
To help Avalanche.
In a cause not my own -
Because of a promise.
I joined you,
Fought beside you,
We found victory,
But bitter defeat,
Claimed the best of us.
Aeris' death caused me
To doubt my sanity.
Even worse, my memory
Became a travesty.
Now, I have discovered
Not all I remember
Is the truth.
Some of it is false -
From another's point of view.
The worst was yet to come,
I gave our enemy
The very thing he desired-
I gave him the means
To destroy our world.
In the North Crater,
I fell to his power.
I betrayed you all
With the Black Materia.
As I pay the penalty
For my treason -
I have the chance to look back -
To discover the truth -
Who am I?
