Scratch and Grounder had always found it hard to quit. Years and years had been seemingly wasted at trying to fulfill a purpose that they had never succeeded at. Their directive had always been quite clear: CATCH THAT DARN HEDGEHOG.

Dr. Robotnik was their creator's name. A large blob that vaguely resembled a human being...if he was even close to that. Tight red clothes patterned with yellow and black, along with grey clasps for the arms hugged the flabby figure. His black eyes with bright red pupils often glowered across the room and at any figure unfortunate enough to be in his view. A large floppy mustache that graced his top lip quivered often in anger at the failure of his robots.

Every day would be the same routine though. Scratch, a robot resembling a humanoid rooster, and Grounder, a pudgy green badnik with many accessories, would go out along the vast valleys of the colorful lands of Mobius with plots and plans every day. If they could find the speedy blue hedgehog, Sonic, they would give it their all. Most times, the plans seemed to be successful, only to fail because of some tiny flaw or because the two 'brothers' began to bicker. The hedgehog would escape and the two dishevled robots would have to return home to inform the Master of their failure.

He was always furious, of course. They were the Super Special Sonic Search and Smash Squad. Badniks build specifically to catch Sonic, who was a thorn in their master's side. And yet they had never preformed their duty nor would they ever. The spiny blue hedgehog always thwarted the villian's plans, and so it was only natural for the evil Doctor to hate him. Sonic had always escaped or outsmarted him though, and to Robotnik...it was always his robot's fault. They had failed, not him.

Being fairly obedient, Scratch and Grounder had never questioned why it was their fault when their Master never got up to carry out most plans himself. He was perfectly capable, but being lazy was a disadvantage to the villain. He was persistant, sure, but extremely lazy.

Thus Robotnik would throttle his badniks, scream at them for hours, dismantle them out of anger, and even kick them out of the base for the night. Never once did he ever think that maybe being kind or praising the robots would help. They had gotten punished no matter what they did, so how could they know if they ever did something right?

Perhaps if the villain had been a little less short tempered with them and had instead taught the badniks how to live up to the potential they could have become, perhaps then the hedgehog would of been his. But no. Laziness and a bad attitude had always led Robotnik to his eventual downfall. Sad repetitive story for him, but happiness to the rest of Mobius and its residents.

The story of that planet would have been an unfortunate one if Robonik had gotten these ideas into his head. Instead the villain moved on, built new robots who never succeeded, never learned his lesson, and never would.
