A/N: This is just a one-shot I did. The lyrics of the song "Abraham's Daughter" by Arcade Fire really moved me, and I feel it captures the entire hunger games series perfectly. This story is entirely based off the song along, in the Panem universe. I want to get reviews on the story, because I'm hoping to make a short film out of it in the near future. So please, Read and Review! Everything is appreciated! Thank you, and Happy Hunger Games!
Having a peacekeeper for a father was no fun fate, and Abraham's Daughter had to live with it.
One early morning, Abraham knocked on the door of an innocent family of District 11, and took the hand of their only son, Isaac. The boy had been hunting in the forbidden woods on the outskirts of his district. He sold all of his game down at the black market for money to pay for his mother's medicines. She had been sick for as long as the family could remember, and her situation only grew in severity. As with every case such as this, Abraham and Mayor Hunning would take the child to top of Lonesome Hill, and execute him.
Abraham's Daughter had watched this boy everyday as he would sneak into the woods after his day of slaving in the fields. Herself being the daughter of a peacekeeper, her family need not work otherwise. Her best guess was that he would sell his game before he left for another sixteen hour shift in the fields.
Abraham's Daughter followed them as they led the boy up to Lonesome Hill. She was sixteen, but her body was small and limber enough that she could move undetected. Her bow and a quiver of arrows bounced against her side as she walked. Once they reached the peak of the hill, she hid in the top of a tree to watch.
Mayor Hunning read off his scripted message, of why this is the course of action that must be taken. Isaac's accounts of illegal activity were entering restricted areas, illegal hunting, illegal trade, and direct provocation of the Capitol. Just one of these would result in a death sentence, but they couldn't execute him four times over. Abraham had a large axe gripped safely into his hands. Once the Mayor's lament was complete, he gave the signal for the final blow. As Abraham's arms swung the axe above his head, his daughter screamed.
"What's your name, child?" The Mayor asked as she jumped down from her tree.
"I have none," she said firmly.
"How can this be?" His face looked as puzzled her situation was.
"My father never gave me one," she answered as she looked towards Abraham. She grasped the bow out of her hand, and loaded it with an arrow.
"How darest you child defy your father!" His teeth clenched together as he pierced through her flesh with his eyes alone.
"You better let young Isaac go," she said without remorse.
