This takes place back in book # 2, at the time when Max and the Flock are all going to school. Fang's POV. Enjoy and R&R!

Max was going out. On a date. I didn't believe it. Why would she date a human? Who could've possibly caught Max's attention? What insignificant human could possibly be better than me?

Wait, wait. I shook my head, trying to clear my thoughts. I did not just think that. Max doesn't belong to me. She can go out with anyone she wants, even if they are just plain stupid humans. The doorbell rang, and I was immediately anxious. What if this guy didn't turn out to be so great after all? A moment later Nudge came down the stairs and said, "Fang, can you let Sam in? Max is still getting ready." Still getting ready? What is she even doing that's taking so long? I thought. But instead, I said, "Ok."

I got up from the couch and made my way to the front door and opened it. And there he stood, looking dorkier than ever. I scoffed at Max's choice, but didn't say anything to him. I just waved him over and closed the door once he was inside. "So…" He began, looking and sounding extremely nervous.

I tended to do that to people.

I just grunted instead of replying, but he just couldn't take a hint. "You're Max's… Brother, right?" "Yeah," I said, sounding bored. What made him think I wanted to talk to him? "That's cool. So… Uh, do you like sports?" Ugh. "No," I said, getting madder and madder by the second. "Oh."

Suddenly a thought occurred to me: What if he hurt Max? What if he ended up not liking Max and she came home sad? With these thoughts in mind, I turned to Sam.

"Hey, uh, Sammy?"

"It's Sam, dude."

"Yeah, whatever. Hey, look, Max is my, uh, sister," I said, remembering just at the last moment that we were all supposed to be siblings. "And I care about her, ok, Sammy?" He looked a little ticked off that I kept calling him Sammy, but he didn't say anything about it this time. Instead he said, "Yeah… So?" He seemed wary of me.

"So," I continued. "I obviously don't want her getting hurt." "Right," he said, agreeing with me. I noticed that he was sweating now, and that he kept fidgeting. "And you and Max just met, so you guys don't really know each other…" He gulped and took a step away from me. "And I realized that you guys might not end up liking each other." I paused, and, after a moment, he nodded vigorously. "Yeah, ok," he said.

"No!" I said, trying not to yell. "That's not ok, Sammy!"

"I-It's n-not?" He asked, stuttering.

"No, it's not. And you wanna know why, Sammy?"

"W-Why?" He barely managed in a small, squeaky voice.

"Because, you might end up breaking her heart. And I swear to you Sammy, if she comes home unhappy for any reason, I will break your face."

Sam's eyes widened and his mouth dropped open. "You wouldn't hurt me." He whispered. "Really?" I asked in a dark voice. "Do you wanna try me?" He stared at me in shock for a few moments, then he came out of it, shaking his head. "N-no." "No?" "I mean, uh, Max won't come home unhappy. I-I promise."

Just then, before I could say anything else, Max's came up to us. "Hey Sam! Hey Nick!" She said, smiling. I didn't get a chance to answer her; Sam took her hand and pulled her away. "Ok, uh, see ya later Nick!" Sam said, trying to mask his nervousness. I walked up to the door and caught it right before Sam closed it. I pulled it open, and took hold of his shoulder before he could run away.

"Remember, Sammy," I said. "Break her heart, and I'll break your face."

I let go of him, and he literally ran across the lawn to where Max was standing, by their car. Max waved bye to me and I waved back. They both got in the car and moments later it drove off. I waited until it was out of my sight, then I went back inside, satisfied that I had just guarantied Max a pretty good time with Sam.
