Just something I made for celebrating the fact that I finished Fear! This is when Drake, Diana, Gaia, and Penny are coming down to Perdido Beach for the first time, and Caine first sees them.

She slowly took his hand.
Being touched by another person was nice, relieving. It was real, a physical thing to keep him anchored down to the world instead of going insane.
Because he could. He knew he could. That had happened to him the first time it had connected with his mind.
And it had never really gone away, that thing. He didn't want it to ever reach him again, so he tried to shut it out, but there had always been a faint part of him that still connected to it, felt it, and united with the darkness. He shut it out, so it wouldn't speak to him ever again, but nothing was ever gone completely and forever.
Nothing.
It was also nice, Caine speculated, to be with his brother when the time came. Not because of some family devotion he felt, certainly not, but his brother was powerful, and it was good to have power with you. Or was it family devotion? Maybe there was a feeling in Caine's deep, stone heart, for his brother. But no, that couldn't be it, Sam was Sam and Caine was Caine. The good and the evil. The Light and the Dark. The Blue hero and the Red hero.
Then again, when there's a common enemy worse than ever before, do the good and the evil join forces? Because that's what it seemed like. Here Caine was, next to his brother like they had been friendly with each other, not causing war and battles and splitting the society of children up.
So Caine let Lana hold his hand for this moment, while something like a flickering candle held in the arms of a person moved with two others flanking it.
They knew The Darkness was coming. They didn't know how, or in what form, but the Gaiaphage was slowly advancing toward them. And the Darkness was coming with what appeared to be Penny, Drake, and one other. He didn't like Penny, he never really did, but she used to be at least good company. Now she was just downright crazy. He did, however, used to like Drake. But then came the whip arm and the Gaiaphage and the undead thing and Brittney. Now he didn't like Drake.
And that third person. The person holding the light. Who was it? It could be many people.
His heart was beating out a message, but he refused to listen to it.
Because Caine knew, on some level, that the third one there was Diana, with her baby. It was as if a dream, a faint glimmer of an idea, was making fun of him. His heart told him so. But his brain refused to believe it. Diana couldn't have had her baby yet. And she was at the lake, anyway, it could certainly not be her.
So he ignored his heart.
When he should have listened to it.
It could have saved them all.
