Hello. Welcome to my first One Piece fic! It's nothing really special, just about Luffy's past. Spoilers for the manga. Enjoy!
Luffy sat in the crow's nest of the Thousand Sunny. It was his turn for watch, obviously, but he was glad. Tonight the stars looked- "Ah! Suge!~ The stars look pretty." He whispered to himself. Immedietly, his mind began to wander to foreign memories…
Back on his home ,Dawn island in the East Blue.
In the forests of Mt. Colvo.
And his brothers.
He remembered the day the three of them made their own base. In that base, they could see the stars shining just like tonight. They had also played pirates. It was funny how the three of them were fighting over the position of captain. Luffy didn't seem to have a chance of having that title back then, but here he is now, the infamous captain of the Straw Hat pirate crew. Luffy grinned to himself. 'I told you I would be captain, Ace, Sabo! But the thing is…we're not on the same ship as you thought. But that's okay. We made a promise!'
Promise…

"Ace, Luffy! Promise that we'll set sail! That we'll escape this kingdom and be free!"

"Listen up, Luffy! I'm not gonna die and don't you forget it!"

Luffy frowned. He tugged on the tips of his hat just like he did when he was younger. It reminded and comforted him that Shanks, his hero, was still out there waiting for him, so he couldn't give up.
'Another promise…'

"When you become a great pirate in the future, promise to return that hat to me, okay?"

Luffy looked back at the sky, hands still on his favourite hat. Ace's promise to him…he had made it after Sabo was killed. True, Ace didn't keep his promise, but he gave his life to save him, the youngest brother. It was what Sabo would've probably approved of, wherever he was. After all, he had asked Ace to take care of him. Ace had fulfilled it well. Of course, that didn't stop Luffy from crying his eyes out, but that was normal for anyone who had just lost a loved one. Though, in the end, as Jimbe told him, he still had his nakama there for him.
Shanks' promise to him…Luffy was sure he wouldn't give up on his dream ever again. He WILL return the straw hat to Shanks no matter what, just as they had promised.
Finally…Sabo's promise to him and Ace…to set out and be free…that was a promise all three of them fulfilled happily. It was the only promise all three of them fulfilled and was proud of.
Luffy took his hands way from his hat as the sun began to rise. He stood up with a determined grin on his face. "Ace, Sabo…I have a new promise that I want to keep. The promise…I'm not gonna be sad about your deaths anymore. I promise that I'm gonna keep on living and being free! I'll protect my nakama and finally…I'M GONNA BE…"
'The Pirate King!'
The sun rose over the horizon as a new day-and a new promise- began.
To me, it looked like Sabo died, but I think he's still alive somewhere.
