A small blond Abnegation boy followed obediently behind his father and mother as they ascended the stairs on their way to the Choosing Ceremony. He'd have rather taken the elevator, but letting others take it instead of them was the selfless thing to do.

Once the family had finally reached the room in which the ceremony was to be held, some Erudites crossed in front of them and one of the boys stared in the blond boy's direction. The Erudite boy had sharp cheekbones, striking blue eyes, and wild dark hair. He was a bit too thin and towered over the Abnegation boy. The Abnegation family moved on and took their seats.

He'd been so nervous that he had nearly forgotten the names would be called in reverse alphabetical order which would put him- "John Watson." He snapped from his thoughts and wiped his sweaty palms on his slacks. The boy had one sister. She was factionless now. She's a disgrace to their family, and now he was about to dishonor them as well.

John took the knife and slid it across his palm. Several shallow breathes and his blood sizzling on the coals marked the worst moment of his life so far. His only focus was not tripping on the way to stand behind the Dauntless. A Stiff making it in Dauntless? Almost unheard of. John didn't recognize any of the other Dauntless initiates expect for the boy that had caught his attention earlier, William Holmes his name was. John wondered if he'd keep it. He didn't think William suited him. It was too ordinary for someone so noticeable.

He found himself entranced by William and hadn't noticed the ceremony was over. "John, was it? Come on, we're leaving." A mousey brown haired girl from Amity grabbed John's arm and pulled him along. The Dauntless were running for the stairs and John had nearly got left behind. "What's your name?" John was a faster runner than the girl, so he slowed down just a bit for her. "Molly." The formerly Amity girl was already slightly out of breathe. "Lots of running. Forgot about that bit."
