Really, the only reason they kissed was thanks to that stupid New Years tradition; the one that says to kiss the closest person when the clock strikes midnight. Although the intake of a few too many drinks might've had something to do with it as well.

Not that either had any real complaints for the time being. Later they could blame it on inebriation, or the bad lighting or Ban would say it was threadspool's fault and Kazuki would insist it was Midou-kun's... And Ginji would just give an amused grin because he saw the entire thing and knows the truth.

But for the moment, Kazuki's lips were soft and supple beneath Ban's, and there was the insistant clash of tongues and fingers digging into hair and bodies pressed together against a far wall in the crowded room of people not paying attention to them while they made out long after midnight had come and gone. When they woke up in the morning in Kazuki's apartment, in Kazuki's bed, with Kazuki and Ban's clothes all over the floor while they both nursed hangovers, neither really knew what to say or do except stare at the other in disbelief.

And Ginji couldn't help but inwardly giggle and snicker when Ban came limping out of the bedroom, cursing to himself about buttons missing off his shirt and still unable to find his boxers, and Kazuki shuffling out after him in a robe and rubbing his temples and already preparing to make a phonecall to Juubei and Sakura to let them know that perhaps his birthday celebration could wait until later in the evening...

Ginji called a Happy Birthday and Happy New Year to him before they left, and Kazuki sank down onto the couch after downing some asprin and attempting to get more sleep. Happy Birthday indeed...

...Next time, dammit, he wanted to remember having enjoyed himself.
