Oh lookie here I found this ancient thing from when Act IV of The Strongest Mega Evolution first aired. The feels were strong then and I am still feels trash now.
Also writing in Alain's perspective is a lot of fun, since it's pretty easy for me to get a sense of what he would be thinking or what he'd do in certain situations.
I guess this counts as a drabble? Maybe? Pfft I dunno, I might do another one from Mairin's perspective because why not :P

This wasn't supposed to happen.
Everything he'd done up to this point, he did it in order to become stronger, so that he could protect what was important to him.
He pushed Mairin away because he needed to do this, and he couldn't bring himself to face her until he'd gotten stronger. If anything happened similar to what went down in Hoenn, he couldn't guarantee that he could keep her safe.
Hell, it was her who saved his ass back then. He put them both in danger because of his recklessness, and that was something he couldn't tolerate.
When he finally took down all ten of the Mega-Evolution trainers, back-to-back, he knew that he could finally protect her properly, and had full intentions of rejoining her. He knew what he'd said affected her, but he'd make it up to her. He wasn't sure how, but he would.
And then everything went downhill.
The worst part was hearing her cry. She was in the comfort of Lysandre, Steven, and Professor Sycamore, which was good—they could give her the support that she needed right now.
But if Alain thought that he couldn't face her before, then what right did he have to go to her now?
This was the exact thing that he was supposed to prevent. It wasn't his fault, not directly, but this would never have happened if he had just let her stay with him.
Why did he make her go?
Now, he is the reason why she is crying. He is the reason why her Chespin lays unconscious at Lysandre's laboratory, with no way of waking him up.
He's the reason why her smile is gone.
He had to fix this. He needed to save Chespin. It didn't matter what he had to do, but he was going to do this for her.
He'll bring her smile back, no matter the cost.
So please… show me your smile once more…
