Tell Tale

-

"Don't even think about doing that."

The voice was low and cool and almost dangerous. Stephen looked up guiltily, his feet on the floor and a jacket around his shoulders to hide the large bandage and the pieces of naked chest that were peeking out from below.

"I wasn't -"

"Don't even start, Stephen!" Abby tapped her foot, hands on her hips, full lips pulled into a frown, "what were you about to do? And don't lie. I will tell Cutter."

"You won't." He didn't sound as sure as he would have like to.

"You bet I will!" Her voice was continuously rising, "you were trying to escape. Again! I don't believe it."

"Um..." Stephen tried to look innocent, whilst also trying to shove the bag on the floor further under the bed, out of sight. "No. no, I was just - just -"

"What's going on?" Connor, breathless, hat in hand. "I heard you all the way down to the break room, Abby. What's going on? You okay, Stephen?" He turned a worried look into Stephen's direction, managing to tear his eyes away from Abby for a moment, and turning back to her immediately. Then frowning. He turned back to Stephen, eying the legs that were swung over the side of the bed, the not-quite-hidden duffel bag on the floor. The jacket, the empty nightstand, where there had been books and chocolate and a postcard.

"What are you doing?"

It wasn't possible for a geeky kid to sound dangerous. It wasn't!

"Shut up you two," and again, he didn't sound as threatening as he wanted to, "I'm just going to the bathroom."

"With your jacket on."

"I- I mean, I wanted to go to the little shop by the entrance." He's never mastered the art of a convincing lie.

"Going to the entrance is about the only thing I believe about that sentence."

"If you tell Cutter, I'm gonna - "

"What?" Abby walked up to him and poked him into the middle of the chest, and fuck! It hurt. He couldn't help but wince and then wince again when he saw Abby's triumphant grin.

"Just don't tell him." He wasn't sulking.

"Jesus, you sound like a five year old, Stephen."

"Thanks, Connor."

"Oh stop it, it's true. Just get back into the bed and I won't tell Cutter. He won't get mad, like he did last time and you'll be out of here by next week."

Stephen mumbled a curse that sounded more than a little petulant, but lifted his feet back into the bed.

"What is going on here?"

Stephen froze. Abby and Connor spun around to look at Nick who was standing breathless in the doorway to Stephen's room, he looked confused. And then frowned.

"Stephen?"

Stephen closed his eyes in resignation. The jacket still around his shoulders, the duffel bag still not hidden on the floor, the nightstand empty. He tried to look innocent and turned to his mentor who was starting to look suspicious. "What exactly are you doing?!"

Behind him Connor grinned.
