"Matt…" The name escaped from the blonde man's lips, his eyes already stinging with tears. 'I never thought you'd be killed…I'm sorry…' Mello slammed his foot on the brake, stopping inside an old, run down church. He got out and, from the passenger seat, grabbed two plastic gas-cans filled with his own deadly concoction of gasoline and kerosene. His face flashed before Mello's eyes: the younger man's emerald eyes, hidden behind orange-tinted goggles, set perfectly in his pale features, framed completely by a mop of reddish-brown hair. The blonde's heart throbbed painfully as he quickly set to work spreading one of the can's contents over the entire room. 'That bitch Takada will die!!! Because of her and KIRA, Matt-! ….M-Matt…' He fought hard to keep the tears from falling. After he was done, he kicked the empty can and went through what once may have been the church's enormous oak doors. He soon found himself at an alter, a large bronze cross hanging over him. He gripped at the rosary around his neck tightly. "Dear God…the almighty…please, forgive me…I must do this…," he said, sitting in one of the old, worn pews near the front of the church. Mello opened the second can and sighed shakily. Taking in a deep breath he poured the contents over his head and body, gagging as the stench threatened to overwhelm him as he tried to breathe through his nose. There he sat for a long while, drenched in gasoline and kerosene, shaking and panting heavily, as Matt came back to him in his mind.
"MATT!!! Where the fuck is my goddamned chocolate?!!!" Mello had screeched, glaring at the goggle-clad gamer before him. Momentarily tuning out the noise, Matt had sat there tapping away at the buttons of his PSP, seeming to ignore the raging blonde. "Did you fucking hear me?!! I said, WHERE TH-" He had been cut off suddenly as Matt held out a rather large bar of imported, expensive looking, special dark chocolate.
"Yeah, I heard you Mels. Just had to beat level eighty-seven really quick," he'd said calmly, glancing at Mello from the corner of his eye. Mello stared for a moment before taking the chocolate bar from his friend and sitting on the extremely worn sofa in their shared apartment. He'd glanced at Matt for a while before finally unwrapping and taking a rather large bite of the chocolate. He was stunned he'd remembered his favorite, even more so that he'd not forgotten what day it'd been. That day had happened to be the very first day they'd met, the first day they'd become friends. A faint blush had risen to his cheeks as he savored the special bittersweet taste of Matt's final gift.
"M-Matt…MATT!!!" Mello yelled, choking on his sobs, filled with the pain and anguish he felt at the loss of his best friend. He wanted to strangle Takada to death, to make her suffer and die slowly and painfully. But his limbs felt heavy at his sides, and he knew that he'd probably collapse if he tried to even stand. 'I treated him like a dog…but, in a way, he was…loyal, obedient, followed me without question…this man's best friend…' He reached into the pocket of his infamous leather pants and pulled out one of Matt's "cheap-o lighters". In that instant, Matt was standing before him, a lit cigarette between his lips.
"Hey, how long are you gonna keep me waiting, Mels? Feels like I've been waiting on your slow ass forever now." Mello smiled serenely, closing his eyes as a quiet chuckle escaped his throat.
"D-Don't you bitch at me…Wait just a d-damn minute…I-I'm coming…Mail." Click. He lit the moisture covering his body and, along with the church, the moving van, and Takada, for only God to see, he vanished in a burst of flames.
