The Sound of Silence

Zack was on a mission in Wutai. He and his comrades—Angeal, Genesis and Sephiroth—were there to help eliminate some of the enemy so they would win the war.

The SOLDERs had been there for six days now, sleeping only when they collapsed from exhaustion. Getting a maximum of forty-five minutes to sleep a night was hard, even for a SOLDIER. Endless assaults seemed to happen every hour on the hour. It could be quite tiring fighting so many, so often. Tonight, however, they could all finally rest.

There had been no attacks for the last few hours, so the group had decided it would be all right to catch up on some sleep. Sephiroth would have them awake twenty minutes before an attack happened, anyway. That man's hearing was unnatural, even for a SOLDER. It did have its perks, though.

Zack was currently getting his sleeping mat set up. Angeal's mat was already set up, and as a comfort, Zack decided to place his mat next to his mentor's.

After setting up, Zack lie down next to the First and let out a sigh. It felt nice to relax in the middle of a war.

His serenity didn't last long, however, as Angeal began to snore, very loudly. Zack was jolted awake immediately. Grumbling, Zack turned his back to his mentor and tried to ignore the foghorn next to him. It didn't work.

Zack gathered his supplies as quickly as he could in his drowsy state-of-mind and moved out of the 'snoring zone'. That place just happened to be next to Genesis. Luckily, this SOLDER didn't snore, and Zack happily set up again.

After a few minutes, however, Genesis began to talk. At first, Zack thought he had woken up his friend, but when Genesis kept talking, he realized that the red-haired man was still asleep.

Genesis' sleep-talk wasn't anything revealing—to Zack's disappointment—only more nonsense from LOVELESS. After a few minutes of listening to random quotes, Zack decided he had had enough and packed up again.

Moving back towards the center of their makeshift camp, Zack found a spot just out of the 'snore zone' and the 'LOVELESS zone'. It appeared that Sephiroth had discovered this spot, as well.

Remembering to be extra quiet so as not to wake the sleeping General, Zack set up again and waited cautiously for any sounds to come from the silver-haired man. He sighed and closed his eyes, enjoying the silence. Until…

"Discovered the other's hidden talents, have you?"

Zack jumped. "Uhh, yes. Yes, sir."

"I have learned the exact placement where neither of their bothersome noises disturb me."

"I've noticed. Mind sharing it with me?"

"Be my guest." With that, Sephiroth rolled back over and promptly fell asleep again, only disturbing the stillness with his deep breathing.

The silence was a nice break. It seemed almost loud compared to the rest of what he had heard that night.

Zack happily closed his eyes as he heard another sound:

Sleep was calling.
