There it went again. The knocking, over and over and over again.
She hadn't bothered to answer last time and they had left, they would leave again.
She wasn't sure how long she had been there, long enough for people to come looking for her at any rate.
She just sat there in the dark, back against the wall, knees pulled up against her chest. She had been like that since he had left, stormed out of the door claiming that he'd never come back.
It felt like her already fragile life had been shattered into a thousand million pieces, and there was no way of repairing in.
"There you are," a voice interrupted her thoughts. She looked up towards its owner with red rimmed eyes. Hobbes, perfect, just the guy she wanted to witness her in such a state.
"The priest and the lizard were getting worried about you. You didn't come to the Church yesterday, or answer the door to the priest."
"So they sent you to check up on me," she said sarcastically.
"Not really. Jack was starting to blurt out scenarios, which involved you having been abducted, slaughtered or worse by the aliens. It was like a broken record, so I decided to take a look into the matter, for the sake of my own sanity."
"Figures..."
"So do you do this on every Saturday night?" he said, kneeling down on the floor next to her.
"Huh?"
"Sit in the dark, pretend you're not home?" Noticing the half empty bottle of whiskey next to her, he added, "Quite the party you have going there."
She grabbed the bottle and shoved it into his hands, "My son left, went to live on the 'V' ship."
He took a long sip, "And what do you think you're accomplishing by wallowing in self pity here?"
"Did you not hear?! They have my son, it's over..."
"I'm disappointed," he interrupted her.
"Oh yeah? And why is that?" she said angrily.
"I'm usually pretty good at figuring people out, I hadn't pegged you for such a coward."
"Excuse me?"
"I thought this would be the kind of thing which would push you even harder, make you want to destroy them more," he paused. "As you said yourself, they have your son, it's time for you to do something about it, let's skin those bastards alive!"
He stood up and held his hand out for her, "Now get your act together, we have work to do."
She refused to take his hand and got up on her own, she looked at him with an icy stare, "Remind me to call you the next time I need a pep talk."
"Hey, I only help the ones I like," he said as he let himself out the front door.
She grabbed her jacket, zipped it up, and slammed the door as she followed him out into the night.
