Coals and Embers

It is midnight, the room is cold. The only light left is the fading light from the dimly glowing embers in the fire place. I sit in a large chair before the fire place, barely noticing the vast change in temperature. The room is no longer warm from the brightly glowing fire from just hours before.

I just sit there, lost in thought, lost in memories really. I remember my beautiful wife, my Ginny, her bright blue eyes that glowed like lit coals with a passion that I had never known before and shall never know again. Her hair, like fire in the summer sunlight, the silky locks blowing in the wind, wild and untamed about her face.

She was so beautiful, even as we grew older, even this morning as she drew her last breath. Her eyes, once bright as coals, grew dim as embers as the Good Lord called her away. I wept as I ran my fingers through her silver hair. I was happy, happy that her suffering was over. Yet, I was sad that she was gone, that I would never again hear her beautiful voice. I looked upon her face, so pale and yet so peaceful after months of pain and suffering. Even in death she was still as beautiful as the day we met.

Now I sit alone, the room is still cold but now it is dark as well. The embers have gone out just like the embers of my life.
