Chapter 1

Enter Lily, a Gryffindor

Lily looked in awe at the Great Hall's ceiling; on it, the perfect image of the the clear night sky. The stars twinkled at her, easing her nervousness. They reassured her that she had a place to be there, just like Severus had said. There really wasn't a reason for the doubt that settled in her stomach.

As the woman, Professor McGonagall, placed a old looking hat on a three legged stool, Lily looked back down and around her.

"Nervous?" Severus whispered to her.

"Never," Lily whispered back.

She heard Severus laugh softly, she smiled at him before looking back at the hat. It had started to sing now.

"When I call your name you will come up and place the Sorting Hat on your head," Professor McGonagall called out.

"Lier," Lily hissed over her shoulder.

Severus laughed again, but he stopped quickly when Professor McGonagall – what keen ears she had – glared at him. She cleared her throat once and called, "Allen, Travis". Lily tapped her foot softly as she waited for her name to be called.

What if her name wasn't called at all? She couldn't go home now, she could just imagine what Petunia would say.

"You're not even good enough for the freaks!"

Lily cringed as she saw in her head the smug look Petunia would wear when she got a higher mark than her on school reports. If she wasn't called, she would simply have refuse to leave. Yes, that was inevitable now that she was here; she would have plant herself down in this hall and refuse to move until they Sort her.

"Evans, Lily." She let out a sigh of relief and walked quickly toward the three legged stool.

Lily took a deep breath as she dropped the worn hat on top of her head. She had no time to feel stage fright because of all the staring students before it covered her eyes.

"Nervous?" a small voice said in her ear.

Lily smiled slightly, before repeating what she had said to Severus before.

"Never," she thought to the voice.

"Ahh... You are an easy one, my dear. Your bravery outshines even your loyalty and wits," the voice chuckled. "GRYFFINDOR!"

Lily took the hat off before looking uncertain of where to go. She walked hesitantly toward the cheering table.

"You'd better be in Slytherin,"

The nervous feeling that had been in her stomach was gone now, it was replaced with... guilt. Severus said he was going to be in Slytherin, she felt like she was abandoning him now.

Lily was distracted all through the feast. She kept looking over to the Slytherin table where Severus sat. She frowned slightly when she noticed he didn't seem to look toward her once. He's happy with the bunch of unpleasant looking people, I guess, Lily thought. She realized she would probably not fit in with that house anyways, but it didn't stop the unhappiness from filling her insides along with the feast.

"You should always make the best of every situation," her grandma told her, touching one of her calloused fingers to Lily's nose.

Lily nodded to herself, I am a Gryffindor.
