Amy had had a wonderful day.

Sonic the Hedgehog, her hero, her idol, the blue hedgehog who she wished was her boyfriend, had actually stopped running for a day.

He brought her to the movies, to a carnival, out for ice cream, and finally, it was nearing sunset, and the two were walking down the beach, the gentle sound of waves lapping against the shore the only sound.

Miss Amy Rose only needed one last thing to make her day complete, and with Sonic who kept looking off to the side, and avoiding her gaze, hinted that it might be coming soon.

"Amy…" Sonic suddenly said, stopping, and turning towards the female hedgehog, "There's something I need to tell you…"

This was how it always started in Amy's daydreams, Sonic would look embarrass, telling her he needed to say something, and then…

"Now…Don't overreact to what I'm about to say, okay?" Sonic said, looking a little worried when he saw the gleam in Amy's eyes, "It's not quite what you think…"

Was it more? Amy's heart was a flutter, wondering just what her hero had planned.

"Amy…I…love you…" Sonic said slowly, and carefully, and Amy opened her mouth to reply, but found herself cut off, by Sonic himself, who didn't seem to notice the fact Amy was about to talk.

"But…"

But…but…There was no 'but' in her dreams. A simple 'I love you', the passionate embrace, him picking Amy off and speeding off somewhere romantic…No but…Never was there a conjunction.

"But…Not like you'd like me to love you…I love you like…well…like family, like Tails. Like…a sister…" Sonic said slowly, looking down into the sand, making no move to run away.

Amy merely gaped, eyes and mouth wide and Sonic's words…Like a sister…

Wordless, a few tears began to well up in her eyes, and Sonic looked up, his face filled with worry.

"I'm sorry Amy…I just don't feel that way about you. You're a great gal and all, and I bet you could get any other guy you wanted," Sonic said quickly, trying to comfort the poor girl, "I didn't want to hurt you…I just needed you to know…We can be friends…can't we?"

Sonic was worried, looking imploringly towards Amy.

The pink hedgehog stared into his eyes. It was no lie what he said. Sonic meant it, every word, truly. He did not love Amy like she loved him.

Amy merely fought back the tears, trying not to cry, but did not answer Sonic either.

"Amy…please…" Sonic murmured, looking worried, "Is there…is there anything I might be able to say to help you?"

Amy merely shook her head, and began to fall to her knees, but familiar arms caught her, embracing her in a hug.

"Amy…I'm sorry…I really am…" Sonic whispered into her ear, "I hope that next time we meet, you'll forgive me…"

He placed her down gently, and she began to cry, and Sonic the Hedgehog dashed off, looking over his shoulder, a single tear falling from his eyes.

Sonic meant what he said…He just hoped Amy would be able to accept it someday…

A.N. Just a little short story I came up with. I write entirely to much with Shadow and Amy. Figured I'd throw Sonic in here with Amy.

I do NOT own Sonic and all related titles.
