He was shocked. No, that wasn't right, he was in shock. Perhaps he shouldn't have been, after everything he had already seen, but it was true. His shock was, perhaps, the only thing truly real to him.

After all, there was no way she could have actually been there, less than three yards away, with a gun in her hand and a smug smile comfortably in place. If she was actually there, he would have to acknowledge the others with her.

The woman standing by her, he recognized. She'd disarmed him of his bat when they met in her apartment, and she'd asked him if he knew where she was while trying to hide the worry that guided her motions. She stood there now, talking with the military commander with a carefully polite smile. The smugness around her eyes matched hers, though.

The military commander would look calm to anyone, but as his CO was the only reason he'd been accepted by the Marines with his questionable past, he could read the expressions that flitted across his boss' face. Said boss looked irked... and scared. Apparently the reputation those people in the bunker had was well-earned.

Another man was by the other woman; he recognized him as her boss. Instead of humiliating her as he had done before, he smirked in the manner of an older brother as he made some comment to her. He stood slightly behind the other woman; he guarded her back.

It was the last man he wanted so desperately to ignore. He matched the first man's position, but he stood by her. He guarded her back and she allowed it; she trusted him enough to show her back even in that situation.

The conversation finished, and the group walked by his hiding place. He almost revealed himself to her, to Alex, but she turned to the man with her before he could and winked.

"Oh, Sean? Yes."

Nathan stayed hidden.
