Prompts: twinkle, gold, Steve/Tony (relationship)
Summary: In which Tony isn't tall enough to put the star on top of the Christmas tree. Steve helps out. Steve/Tony. Rated T for Tony's ... colorful language.
Title: Pretty Please, With a Star On Top?
"Damn it!" The blonde haired man watched, amused, as his shorter boyfriend tried to place the star on top of the Christmas tree, cursing as he failed.
"Language, Tony." The blonde man chided, and his boyfriend whirled around, giving the blonde a pout.
"Don't be a jerk, Steve. I'm just trying to get the goddamn star on the fucking Christmas tree." Tony shot back, before turning back to the Christmas tree. "Now why the hell did we get an eight foot tall tree?" Tony grumbled, his fingers absentmindedly tracing over the shape of the gold star in his hands. Steve chuckled, walking up to his boyfriend and wrapping his arms around Tony's waist, his chin resting on Tony's shoulder.
"Weren't you the one who picked the tree?" Steve inquired, pressing a soft kiss against the side of Tony's neck. "You said that you hated tiny Christmas trees, but if the tree was too big, it'd leave pine needles everywhere, and in your words, 'it would be a pain in the ass to clean up'."
"But why did you guys agree?" Tony scowled, even though Steve could detect the fondness emitting from the brunette. Tony plucked himself out of Steve's embrace and tried once more, (in vain,) to place the star on the top of the tree. Steve bit back a laugh at his boyfriend's attempts. Tony seemed to detect the laugh threatening to bubble up in Steve's chest and gave him a small glare.
"Stop being a jerk, babe," Tony frowned, his nose crinkling.
"Do you need help?" Steve offered, and Tony - after a second of hesitance, shook his head. Steve raised his eyebrows dubiously. "Really?"
"I'm not helpless, you know?" Tony resumed his attempts at trying to place the star on the Christmas tree. After two more (failed) tries, Tony summoned one of his Iron Man suits, having JARVIS control the suit. The suit hovered near the top of the Christmas tree, the gold star slowly descending onto the Christmas tree while Tony watched in anticipation.
The golden star fitted perfectly onto the tree. The suit was then dismissed, and Tony turned to Steve proudly.
"See, I didn't need your help." He said triumphantly, before Steve let out a fake cough. Tony turned back to the Christmas tree. The golden star had fallen. "Damnit."
Tony turned his gaze to Steve, who walked over to him without needing the question asked. Steve walked in front of Tony, and squatted down, his hands on his knees. Tony jumped onto Steve's back without warning, causing Steve to almost tip over before the super-soldier regained his balance. Tony wrapped his arms around his lover's neck while Steve straightened up. Tony reached out the hand with the golden star in it, reaching and reaching and - plop.
The golden star fell onto the top of the tree. It stayed there. Steve lowered Tony gently and the shorter man descended from Steve's back.
"Thanks, babe." Tony gave Steve a smile.
"Anytime, sweetheart."
The two stepped back to observe the tree. The lights draped on it twinkled and glimmered, the ornaments on it added color, the rug under the tree added a feeling of home and a sense of belonging, and the star on top of the Christmas tree - just wrapped it all up.
