Pregnant.
Why did that word sound so strange all of a sudden? Like it wasn't normal, wasn't natural.
Pregnant.
Pregnant.
Pregnant.
Preg… nant…
"Vakama?"
He shook himself out of his daze of repeating the word out in his head, his feeble attempt to make it sound normal or at least easier to swallow, and looked up at his partner's face, her golden eyes staring at his with distinct worry.
Vakama swallowed audibly. "So-Sorry, Nokama… it's just… are you sure?"
Nokama just nodded slowly, her eyes never leaving his. "Positive."
"Positive?" He meekly repeated.
She just nodded again.
The pause hung in the air heavily, it was suffocating. He was almost grateful when she spoke again.
Almost.
"I used about 5 different tests… then I asked Nuju to take a sample of my blood-" He didn't catch the rest of that sentence due to the next thought to run through his mind.
'Wait, shit, NUJU knows too!?'
She must've caught the look of absolute horror that crossed his face because she quickly explained herself. "Yes, Nuju knows, but he respects us both enough to not say anything until WE decide what we're going to do."
He looked down at his feet, sweaty hands clasped nervously together. "What… we're going to do?" He knew he was just echoing her now, he knew that. But he couldn't help it. This had hit him harder than getting run over by a herd of Kikanalo.
Nokama nodded slowly before speaking up again, "Yes, Vakama," her tone soft, as if she was speaking to a child, "What we plan to do about this."
Vakama swallowed roughly, his thoughts running a million kios a second yet not at all. He ran a hand over his mask and chuckled nervously. "How… How can you be so calm?" He asked after a few forced attempts.
The Toa of Water had a smile tug the corner of her lips and she chuckled. "Calm? Maybe Matau's right, you are crazy, because I'm anything but."
He smiled weakly, chuckling slightly before he found himself pulling her close to him, his arms wrapped around her waist as he buried his face against her neck. "Could've fooled me…"
Nokama stroked the side of his mask gently. "To give myself credit… I've had more time to digest it than you have."
"How long?"
"About a week or so…" She sighed softly. "I'm sorry, I should've come to you when I first found out, but – "
"No," He stopped her, finally looking down at her, into those beautiful golden orange eyes. "It's fine… At least one of us is… relatively calm." The Toa of Fire pressed his lips to her temple, finally letting the news sink in.
A baby.
His baby.
Her baby.
Their baby.
Vakama found himself smiling against her skin.
That didn't sound as strange.
