Hope
It had started off as a normal battle. The villain was new to them, perhaps out to make a name for himself or had already made a name for himself, but headed to Jump City for reasons unknown. Villains came nowadays for the challenge, to see if they could defeat the legendary Teen Titans. None had succeeded. Robin had dragged them to a warehouse near the docks and they had managed to back the villain into a corner. There was no decoration on his costume, the only visible object against the black being his burning red eyes. Raven wasn't sure what made this villain any different. Perhaps he just got lucky.
But something changed.
"Raven!" Came a scream. Everything seemed to go in slow motion from there. She turned, her cloak fluttering around her, hearing only her own heartbeat as it thundered in her chest. The blasting heat from the red laser was all she could register. It was too hot, too large, too close. The forceful shove from the size was unexpected. Raven slammed onto the ground, taking the force on her hip as she slid along, pebbles grazing her skin. But whoever had saved her – they wouldn't have been able to get out of the way in time, it had been coming so fast. Something exploded to her left, an empty crate, a wall support perhaps. But no one cared. She twisted around and shuddered. Red hair strewn around the body, matching the pool of blood that was slowly growing larger. For a moment, she thought the pain filled shriek was coming from her, the pain inside her growing larger. Raven's head snapped up to focus on Robin, his features twisted in rage. The scream stopped as abruptly as it had started.
They all moved as one. Robin lunged for the nameless villain, Beastboy and Cyborg after him, kill him, I'm going to kill him, while Raven scrambled over to Starfire, Azarath, please don't let her be dead, please. There was a hole right through her, and Starfire, she's not breathing, Raven would heal her if it was the last thing she did.
What if she couldn't? She had never truly believed, after they had defeated Trigon, the Brotherhood of Evil, how could they lose one of their own, to a nameless weakling? The pain, the despair, it was growing and still nothing was exploding and Starfire wasn't healing. She had to live. She had to be saved.
For Beast Boy.
For Cyborg.
For Robin.
For Raven herself.
Starfire was her best friend, and she couldn't die.
She could feel the pain rippling off Robin, worse than anything she could ever imagine. Raven didn't glance up as the darkness encased Starfire. Then she heard it. An intake of breath, a flutter of the heart. Starfire's eyes opened slowly and Raven slumped down. "Raven?" She whispered sleepily.
And then she felt hope. Looking up, she locked eyes with Beast Boy, who was sitting on the floor. She gave a true smile, before tearing her eyes from his, not wanting to see the confused look on his face. She looked at Cyborg, who looked relieved. Then she looked at Robin, who was already rushing to Starfire's side, and felt the love she knew he felt. Raven stayed where she was but glanced at Beast Boy who grinned at her. Maybe there was hope for all of them in the end.
