Title: The Mission

Author: Surreal44

Rating: G

Pairings: None

Author Notes: Just a little conspiracy idea that I've kicked around.
Loosely based on a legend about the Masons and Templars.

Also, to those who may be waiting on "By Our Own Hands" (hopefully some of you are still around :) ), a new chapter will hopefully be up soon. Soon as in a week...or two. I promise. :)

Beta Notes: Thanks to the lovely ScoutLover, who is beyond patient
with me.

KAKAKA

"Was the mission successful?" the Pope asked Bishop Germanus as the Bishop gazed outside the window. The Bishop bowed in greeting to thePope and kissed the ring on the hand of the most powerful man in the Empire.

"It was," Germanus responded as he straighted. "Alecto is waiting for you in the meeting hall." The Pope nodded and motioned for the Bishop to walk beside him as they began walking through the halls.

"And Arthur?" the Pope asked after a few moments of silence.

Germanus responded quietly, "He survived the battle, and soon will be crowned the new leader for of Britain. He will do what we were unable to achieve. Pelagius will be pleased."

"And you are not?" the Pope questioned, stopping mid-stride, his knowing gaze piercing Germanus.

There was another small silence as Germanus gathered his thoughts. "For a leader of men, I can think of no better man than Arthur. Yet it pains me at what was done -"

"I understand," the Pope interrupted. The two men stopped in front of the doorway. "I, too, feel the same way. It is a heavy burden he mustcarry. I know it weighs on your heart that you had to push him to this. I am sorrowful for all that has happened, but it was necessary.
You know this."

"Yes." Germanus nodded. "Yes, it was right. I do not regret the decision. We must all make sacrifices." Germanus gazed up at the archway they had stopped in front of and smiled. The Pope smiled backand entered the room while Germanus remained outside and looked up the
keystone of the arch way.

Etched into the stone was a triangle with an eye. Yes, many had made sacrifices for the future of the world, and they would continue to doso as long as their brotherhood remained. With a small smile Germanus followed the Pope to greet Pelagius and Alecto.
