Midnight Lullaby

The heavy silk curtains had been pulled back from the arched windows. Moonlight drifted in through the chiffon under-layer, across the carpeted floor and illuminating the cot. A small mobile dangled overhead, the clear plastic stars shining prettily. A tiny figure lay within, swaddled in blankets, yawning often.

The last tendrils of Ave Maria slowly faded. Len lowered his violin and bow, his eyes never once straying from his son. It was late and the shadows were dark, but his son's small, round face was perfectly illuminated. Wrapped up tightly, the baby stared up with tired pale brown eyes. A small spark of curiosity lit them, uncertain of the newfound silence.

"No," he said softly. "Not again."

Heaven forbid that he forget that one night when playing continuously actually woke him. His son mumbled indistinguishably. His tiny fists began to relax and he let out a yawn. Smiling, Len pulled over a stool and sat next to the cot, waiting. It wouldn't be long now. Not that he minded particularly. He just didn't want Hino to wake up without him there.

It was in this manner that Hino found him hours later. With a soft smile, she crossed over to him, pressing a kiss against his temple and unravelling the blanket from around her shoulders. He let out a quiet sigh. Smiling, she carefully draped it over his front, the soft cotton fabric right up to his chin. She paused, admiring the peacefulness of the scene.

Crossing over to the window, she admired the intrusion of soft yellow-orange light for a moment. Then she drew the heavier silk curtains shut, cloaking the room in darkness. A faint glow outlined the door, which she tiptoed towards.

She didn't want to wake her boys, after all.

Author's Note: This story is for fallenwolfoveryingfa. This didn't turn out quite as I had expected it to. It had a will of its own, I suppose. I hope that you like it, though. I can always try again if not!
