When she shut her eyes, nothing around her mattered. The rain, the cold, the lonliness - it all went away. She went away to be with her family. Sometimes, she was with the group, all of them smiling at her, welcoming her. Other times, she watched as the scarred blonde with the wary gaze slowly began to trust her. Though Jasper was more difficult, it was all worth it in the end. His arms were around her, keeping her safe, protecting her. Better yet, she never grew tired anymore. She could spend forever with them - with him, where she was happy.
The white haired woman stirred, fighting the restraints that held her. The threadbare pink ribe fell open as her back arched, the hospital gown beneath almost falling off her thin frame. When she relaxed and started laughing, the hospital's newest intern jumped away from the doorframe. "I see you've met Mary Alice," a co-worker noted as the edgy intern landed on his foot. "She's been in here most of her life."
"Why?" The woman's laughter continued, almost echoing off the walls in the confined space.
"Blind and off her rocker. She's a danger to herself."
Though there was pity in the man's voice, Mary Alice heard none of it. Smiling toothlessly, she stared beyond the empty ceiling above her. In her mind, she was young and beautiful, with a laugh like silver bells. In her mind, she was with Jasper, just as she had been for the past sixty-four years.
